2. Calculate Hand Rankings
Poker is a card game of rankings and values. Any player who does not know the value of their hand will be lost in the game. That is why it always makes sense to calculate the value of a hand as the game goes on.
Knowing the basics of card values will always help with making decisions in the game. It will also instil confidence in gameplay. In most five-card poker games the top to bottom value lists for hands is usually very similar. A Royal Flush of Ace, King, Queen. Jack and 10 all in the same suit will invariably be the strongest possible hand.
Other closer hand values, such as the fact that four-of-a-kind will beat a full-house, are important to know. This knowledge will enable the player to make quicker and more confident decisions in selection and play.

Lövgren Joins 888poker Team
Even though she's mainly a cash game player, Lövgren is no stranger when it comes to poker tournaments. In 2013, Lövgren had a deep run when she participated in the High Roller at European Poker Tour London. In April 2014, Lövgren joined the 888poker team, which used to be known as Pacific Poker. Since then, she has been playing in this poker team as Sofia Lovgren. 888poker is a well-known online poker cardroom based in Gibraltar and established in 2002.
After 4 years of playing poker as a member of the PKR Team Pro, she shared her views on poker and women, the new, exciting adventure with 888poker plus something that she thinks Sweden should change so that people can enjoy the freedom they really deserve. She also added some important advice for people considering to turn poker into a career. She advised people to only quit their jobs for poker when their win rate online/hour is higher than their current job. You should have records from numerous hands to be certain that you are making the right decision.
She loves the fact that poker is now involving women because when women are successful, it will create excitement and more people will be interested in playing poker. She believes that it's important to tell stories of women who have been successful in poker through the media. This will attract more ladies to this game.
Early in April 2100, she participated in the main event of the popular Irish Poker Open held in Dublin, Ireland, which was her first live poker tournament. The tournament was attended by a total of 708 poker players. The Irish Poker Open is known to be Europe's longest existing No Limit Texas hold 'em tournament and also the world's second longest.

Tournaments
A poker tournament is where a player pays a set fee to enter and receives a specified number of chips. All players receive exactly the same number of chips, so everyone starts with on level playing field.
Tournaments usually take place over several tables, and players drop out once they have lost all their chips. If a table runs short of players then players from other tables are called to make up the numbers.
Play continues until only one player remains having won all the other players’ chips. They win a set fee, and there are usually prizes too for other players who remained in the tournament the longest.
The Game’s History
Like the roulette wheel, poker has a long history and it is also an untouched masterpiece. Poker’s roots stretch back almost two hundred years. The term ‘Poker’ is likely to have derived from the French phrase ‘Poque’, which itself descends from the German ‘Pochen’ meaning to knock.
It was 1829 in the heavily French influenced New Orleans that an English actor, Joseph Crowell, reported a game was played using a deck of 20 cards with four players betting on which player’s hand was the most valuable.
Fourteen years on the book an ‘Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling’ described the spread of poker from the Louisiana capital to the rest of the country by Mississippi riverboats and their passengers, on which gambling was a widespread pastime. There is every chance the common poker expression the ‘river card’ originated from poker playing on these riverboats?
During the next fifty years a full 52-card English/French deck was introduced, flushes and straights were introduced and variations such as ‘Draw’ and ‘Stud’ poker appeared.
The Americanisation of poker and its integration into the country’s culture means many of the game’s phrases have become commonplace within its language. Few would be aware that everyday terms such as ‘ace in the hole’, ‘beats me’, ‘blue chip’, ‘call the bluff’, ‘cash-in’, ‘pass the buck’, ‘up the ante’, ‘when the chips are down’, ‘wild card’ and others all derive from poker jargon.
Rules of poker
The object of poker is to obtain a better hand than your opponents. At the end of each round of poker, the player who remains in the game (i.e. who has not folded) with the best hand is the winner and takes the pot. Poker is also a betting game. To stay in the hand you must bet chips up to the current pot level. If you don’t want to (or can’t) bet the required number of chips, then you must fold.
A poker hand is made up of five cards. The possible poker hands, in order of value, are as follows:
- Straight flush: A sequence of five consecutive cards of the same suit
- Four of a kind: Four cards of the same value
- Full house: Three cards of the same value, plus a pair
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit, but not in sequence
- Straight: Five cards in sequence, but of different suits
- Three of a kind: Three cards of the same value
- Two pair: Two pairs
- One pair: One pair
- High card: A hand with no value
All equal hands are ranked in terms of their highest card. For example, a straight flush of AKQJT (known as a ‘royal flush’) beats a straight flush of KQJT9.

Introduction to Seven Card Draw
Seven Card Draw is the big brother of the popular Five Card Draw, the games are basically the same except from in Seven Card Draw players receive a total of seven cards instead of five. Seven Card Draw has never been a very popular game in casinos or in online poker; however it has been played quite a lot in home games around the world.
When you play Seven Card Draw, you and the other players all receive seven cards face down and start betting. You can then swap the cards on your hand you don’t need to try and improve your hand and then bet again. The best five card combination using the high ranking system then wins the hand. It doesn’t matter which of the seven cards you use for the five card combination, you can use all of them.
Seven Card Draw is easy to learn as it resembles Five Card Draw so much, which many players already know the rules of. Even for players that has never played a hand of poker in his life, the game is very easy to understand and as soon as the player understands the hand rankings he will be able to play.
Seven Card Draw is known to provide more action than Five Card Draw, due to the fact that each player has two cards more to create combinations with, making it more likely they will hit a hand. This is the reason why many home games throughout the years changed from Five Card Draw to Seven Card Draw. Get $100 free on your first deposit at GGPoker

1960 Betting and Gaming Act and Betting Shops
In 1960 the government finally embraced the new age. Normal people had more disposable income in their pockets and they wanted more freedom with how to spend their money. The betting act for the first time allowed off-course gambling and by the following year, May 1961, a whole host of new betting shops opened across the length of the country at a rate of 100 a week.
Betting was still largely restricted to horse racing, with rules in place such as the 'trebles rule' on football. This meant all footy bets needed to be accumulators with at least 3 or more selections otherwise you couldn't bet. The only sports you could place singles on was racing.
Still this new industry was embraced by the people of Britain, sowing the seed that eventually led to the UK becoming the biggest gambling nation (per head) in the world.
One of the first people to open one of these new betting shops was Joel Coral and 10,000 shops are reported to have opened within the first 6 months. Ironically the UK's now biggest high street bookie, William Hill, initially refused to open betting shops, stating they were a cancer on society. He reneged in 1966.

UK And Ireland Online Rankings Show Christopher Brammer On Top
According to officials, the latest virtual poker tournament rankings are showing Christopher Brammer on top. The most recent update completed by the guys at PocketFives.com says that Christopher “NigDawG” Brammer is on top and many believe he has strong enough arguments to remain there for quite a while, thanks to his amazing margins that are placing him higher in the hierarchy than any other of his opponents. Seeing Christopher Brammer on top does not exactly come as a shock to many who have watched his work over lately. Nevertheless, Brammer pulled quite a trick when he went to Cannes for a whole week, attending the WSOP, the European version, abandoning his chair.

How Valuable Are Poker HUDs?
99%+ of winning online poker players (long-term) use a HUD.
That stat alone should say it all.
However, let’s take a look at the value they offer:
HUDs access hand histories that are stored as text files on your computer automatically by your poker client (whether that be PokerStars, PartyPoker or whichever other poker site).
The HUD then mines and displays the relevant date from them in real-time.
Most common statistics that the HUDS show on opponents are:
- VPIP (Voluntarily Put chips In the Pot) – how active a player is being
- PFR (Pre-Flop Raise) – what percentage of pots a player is raising pre-flop
- Aggression factor – how aggressive a player is being
- 3bet frequency – the percentage of pots a player is re-raising.
- Post flop decisions – how often do they check or bet the flop? Or the turn? Or the river?
There are many more statistics available, and you’re usually able to customise exactly what information is appearing in your feed.
All of this information is designed to help your decision making and make them become second nature – almost robotic, instantaneous decisions the majority of the time.
Your HUD will be updated in real time so you’re seeing exactly what your opponents are doing against you today.
All of this builds into what the picture you’re creating of who you’re up against and let’s you know how you should alter or adapt your style.
While it may seem like a screen full of numbers, it’s actually your ticket to much better results once you become accustomed to it.
This process doesn’t usually take too much time.
If you’ve watched any successful live streamer they are almost certainly using a HUD – so you’ve probably seen one in action, even if you haven’t specifically realised it.
Basically anyone who is taking the game seriously is using tracking software and a HUD.
Some people use them/rely on them more than others, but there are very few serious players who don’t own the software already.
By taking care of the numbers, you’re able to focus more on the decisions that matter; sensible play, timing tells, mathematically profitable plays and more.
From here you can adjust your game, exploit another player’s weaknesses and make more accurate decisions.
Poker is all about making the correct choices over and over again, and knowledge is the key to being right more often.
However…
HUDs aren’t just useful for the key statistics.
They let you evaluate what type of player you’re up against.
Poor recreational players (or fish) can be identified based on their actions, with some poker tracking software even automatically generating images (such as fish or even whales) based on playing styles.
By easily being able to see the good and bad players you can instantly tell a good game from a bad one.
HUDs will also identify everything from past experiences (within reasonable timeframes) and feed them into the present games.
Needless to say, a poker HUD will not allow you to win every time. However, it does swing the odds much more firmly in your favour.
Chances are, when playing without one on any of the big poker sites, you’re playing against someone that has more information on you than you have on them.
