Odds of Making a Pair on the Later Streets

Let’s imagine we have entirely missed the flop with an unpaired hand and want to know our chances of picking up a Pair on either the turn or river.

At this stage, five cards are already out (the flop plus our two hole cards). There are 47 cards left in the deck, six of which give us a Pair.

Our chances of hitting a Pair on the turn are hence 6/47 = 0.12767 or about 12.8%.

Going from turn to river, there is one less card in the deck, meaning our chances of spiking one Pair on the river with an unpaired hand on the turn are 6/46 = 0.1304 or about 13%

Note that there is a slightly higher chance of spiking from turn to river due to the smaller pool of available cards we are drawing from.

Finally, let’s calculate our chances of hitting going from flop until the river. We do this by calculating our chances of not hitting and then subtracting from 100%.

Chances of not hitting one Pair on the turn = 41/47

Chances of not hitting one Pair on the river = 40/46

Probability of missing on both streets = (41/47) * (40/46) = 0.7586 or about 76%

Our chance of hitting going from flop to river is hence (100% - 76%) about 24%.

As online poker has grown in popularity, people have developed tools and web-based services to help them play better online. We think it is okay for players to use some of these tools and services. However, we think that some go beyond what we consider acceptable as an aid to playing online.

There are many things that a player can do to improve their chances in a poker game. For instance, they can play a lot and gain experience, or they can read a book about poker. Both of these techniques are clearly appropriate. At the other end of the spectrum, they can use a tool that informs them exactly what action to take in real-time. This is clearly cheating.

In between those two extremes are many tools - some of which we consider to be too close to cheating. For example, there are people building databases with profiles of many players online, and they are sharing access to these databases. A player with access to such a database can call up detailed information about their opponents without ever playing against those opponents themselves. We believe this gives that player an unfair advantage against others at their table.

The policy we have developed over the years follows thorough discussions internally and with poker experts, including our team of professionals. It is designed to be an appropriate compromise between allowing the use of tools and services that might enhance the playing and learning experience for the user, while prohibiting tools and services that give the user an unfair advantage.

We encourage feedback from our customers and take constructive feedback into consideration in future updates to our policy. However, knowledgeable people will disagree over what is appropriate and what is not.

Our policy groups tools and services into three categories:

Trick 2 – Memorisation

The simplest way to improve our calculation speed is actually to avoid all unnecessary calculation. Most professional players will tell us that there is no point calculating a value repeatedly if it can be easily memorised.

For example, the following table shows us our pot odds (as a percentage) when facing standard bet sizings.

Facing Bet Size (%)Pot Odds (%)
2014.29
2516.67
3319.88
4022.22
5025.00
6027.27
6628.45
7029.17
7530.00
8030.77
10033.33
15037.50
20040.00

For instance, if our opponent bets $50 into a $100 pot, a professional player will typically be able to tell us that we are getting 25% pot odds without performing any calculation. They have simply memorised that a half pot bet from our opponent offers us 25% pot odds.

Similar memorisation techniques can be used for -

  1. Our chances of catching on the next street or by the river with different types of hands.
  2. The required folding frequency for a bluff of particular sizing to be profitable.

That’s already a considerable amount of the maths cut right out of the equation!

Odds of Making a Straight on the Later Streets

The probability of making a Straight on the later streets depends on the type of draw we flop. Open-ended Straight draws (OESD) have 8 outs, while gutshots have 4 outs.

Odds of hitting from flop to turn

Odds of hitting an open-ended Straight draw from flop to turn = 8/47 = 0.1702 or about 17%

Odds of hitting a gutshot from flop to turn = 4/47 = 0.0851 or about 8.5%

Odds of hitting from turn to river

Odds of hitting an open-ended Straight draw from turn to river = 8/46 = 0.1739 or about 17.4%

Odds of hitting a gutshot from turn to river = 4/46 = 0.087 or about 8.7%

Odds of hitting from flop to river

Here we will use the simple trick of calculating the probability of not hitting and deducting it from 100%.

Probability of not hitting an OESD on the turn = 39/47

Probability of not hitting an OESD on the river = 38/46

Probability of not hitting a gutshot on the turn or river = 39/47 * 38/46 = 0.6855 or 68.5%

Probability of not hitting a gutshot on the turn = 43/47

Probability of not hitting a gutshot on the river = 42/46

Probability of not hitting a gutshot on the turn or river = 43/47 * 42/46 = 0.8353 or 83.5%

Therefore -

The probability of hitting a gutshot on the turn or river = (100 – 83.5) roughly 26.5%

The probability of hitting an OESD on the turn or river = (100 – 68.5) roughly 31.5%

HOW TO CALCULATE PREFLOP ODDS

So how does the above calculation actually work? We simply need to look at the price we are getting and compare it to our pot odds. If we have already worked with postflop pot odds calculations, then preflop calculations are no different. We need to call $75 after our opponent shoves.

Think about the following:1. How big would the total pot be if we made the call?2. What percentage of the whole pot would we be investing if we called? After calling, the total pot will be roughly 200bb (201bb to be exact but let’s round down). This makes sense given that two players with 100bb effective stacks are all-in. We would be investing 75bb of that total (note that we don’t count our initial 25bb 4bet since this is already part of the pot). We’d hence be investing 75/200 or 37.5% of the total pot. Therefore, 37.5% is our pot-odds expressed as a percentage. Note that some old-school players still prefer to express this as a ratio. i.e. 1.67:1 in this case, but most modern poker players have abandoned ratios entirely. Why? Because we need to compare our pot-odds to our pot-equity, which is usually in percentage form. Either way, we’ll need to convert our pot-odds ratio to a percentage, so it makes sense to skip a step and ignore ratios entirely.

Calling a heads-up all-in shove when playing 100bb effective allows for an easy pot-odds estimate. Seeing as the total pot-size will always be roughly 200bb, we can simply divide our call-amount by 2 to calculate our pot odds expressed as a percentage.

Provided the amount of pot equity we have exceeds our preflop pot odds (37.5%) we will have a call which generates profit in the long-run.

How much equity do we have in the above scenario though?

What does four-of-a-kind beat?

This is very often a winning poker hand, beating anything other than a straight/royal flush. If another player also has a four of a kind, the rank of the four cards will determine who wins. For example, J-J-J-J-4 beats A-7-7-7-7.

4. Full House

Basic Strategy Advice

Full Houses are ultra-strong hands in Hold’em and should nearly always be stacked off for 100bb stacks. The only exception is really the one-card underfull. This is still a relatively strong hand, but we’ll likely try and avoid getting all of the stacks in when facing aggression.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever flopped Two Pair and lost to a bigger Two Pair!

See all the hands going up? And when it happens, you often lose a big pot, especially on a dry board. Your negative implied odds are even worse when you hit your boat. Bottom pair turns into a weak boat, and you can lose your stack to a bigger full house.

Another big problem occurs when the card you do not hold pairs on the turn or river. Now you are reduced to one pair not on the board and possibly a weak kicker.

That card counterfeits your Two Pair.

And remember this very crucial point:

You may have had a beautiful hand on the flop. But once you’ve been counterfeited, forget about your strong hand. It may be garbage. Don’t fall into the trap of being in love with your hand and thinking you’re going to win. It’s over! Move on. Let it go!

It’s so tough to realise that you are no longer in good shape. You might be tempted to call a bet because you feel entitled to the pot. It’s like when you raise pre-flop with kings, and an ace flops.

You need to get over the excitement you felt pre-flop and deal with the current situation.

Now, let’s get into how to play this challenging hand in Texas Hold’em.

Calculating Poker Equities Before the River

People say poker is a maths-based game. And, to a large extent, that is undoubtedly true.

One of the most common applications of mathematics in poker deals with hand equities. Here, we are referring to the likelihood of a specific hand winning by the river.

Poker Equity: Hand vs Hand

Many of these equity situations will become frequent in poker. So, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with common factors.

For example, let’s suppose you and another player are all-in preflop. You have AKo, and your opponent has AQs.

How often are you going to win the hand?

Luckily for us, computers can easily calculate the correct answer across the ~250million different community card runouts!

SOLUTION #1: Using Poker Odds Calculator

  • Go to the 888poker Poker Odds Calculator (We highly recommend bookmarking this page, especially if you’re starting in poker)
  • Plug in AsKc under one hand and AhQh under the other.
  • You see that the AKo will win outright 68% of the time and tie about 4% of the time.

SOLUTION #2: Using Poker Charts

  • Go to this page of 20 Poker Charts we’ve created.
  • See that Charts #11 and #12 have common preflop and post-flop equities.
  • Memorise these common hand vshand match-ups.

We can see from Chart #11 that in a “Dominating Higher Card” scenario (i.e., AK vs AQ), that the AK will win about 73% of the time.

Poker Equity: Hand vs Range

Poker Equity: Hand vs Range

The above information won’t help, though, unless you know your opponent’s two hole cards. But knowing this the percentages can help you make a more informed decision on how to proceed in a hand.

For example, let’s say the action is preflop, You have AK, and your opponent went all-in. You think your opponent will have AQ, AK, and TT+.

What is your equity against this hand range? Include all these possible holdings put together instead of just one of these hands.

SOLUTION #1: Manual Calculation

You do these calculations manually by working out individual hand vs hand equities:

  • 50% against AK (9 combos)
  • 73% against AQ (12 combos)
  • 8% against AA (3 combos)
  • 30% against KK (6 combos)
  • 46% against TT-QQ (18 combos)

Now, we add the total number of hand combos we’re facing (48 combos). Then we calculate the average equity of all the combos put together:

  • vs. AK: (9 combos/48 combos) x (0.5 chance of winning) = 9.4%
  • vs. AQ: (12/48) x (0.73) = 18.3%
  • vs. AA (3/48) x (0.08) = 0.5%
  • vs. KK (6/48) x (0.3) = 3.8%
  • vs. TT-QQ (18/48) x (0.46) = 17.3%

Lastly, we add up all these totals. AK will have about 49.3% equity against Villain’s range.

Now, we would simply relate this equity (vs our presumed Villain hand range) to the pot odds. We can determine or not we should call based on the pot odds.

In about any situation, this calculation would be right under 50%,

As you can see, this is a complex process to do manually.

Luckily for us, there’s another method we can use to solve the problem.

SOLUTION #2: Poker Hand Strength Calculator (Equity Calculator)

Many software programs allow players to calculate the equity of a singular poker hand vs a range of poker hands.

Examples of such software include:

  • Equilab (PC)
  • PokerCruncher (Mac / iOS)
  • PokerTracker4 (built-in Equity Calculator)

In these programs, we can simply plug in AK for Hand #1.

  • Input the hand range for Hand #2.
  • And then the software will compute -
Software

NOTE: The software will allow our answers to be much more specific and accurate. The calculations in the 20 Poker Charts article are rounded up/down. So by using these figures to manually calculate everything out, we arrived at 49.3% instead of 49.8%.

Ultimately, the more practice you do with these calculators, the more comfortable you’ll get. You’ll start to know what to do in a given situation instinctively.

With that comes the ability to manually adjust and calculate this in real-time.
