The Game’s History

Like the roulette wheel, poker has a long history and it is also an untouched masterpiece. Poker’s roots stretch back almost two hundred years.  The term ‘Poker’ is likely to have derived from the French phrase ‘Poque’, which itself descends from the German ‘Pochen’ meaning to knock.

It was 1829 in the heavily French influenced New Orleans that an English actor, Joseph Crowell, reported a game was played using a deck of 20 cards with four players betting on which player’s hand was the most valuable.

Fourteen years on the book an ‘Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling’ described the spread of poker from the Louisiana capital to the rest of the country by Mississippi riverboats and their passengers, on which gambling was a widespread pastime.  There is every chance the common poker expression the ‘river card’ originated from poker playing on these riverboats?

During the next fifty years a full 52-card English/French deck was introduced, flushes and straights were introduced and variations such as ‘Draw’ and ‘Stud’ poker appeared.

The Americanisation of poker and its integration into the country’s culture means many of the game’s phrases have become commonplace within its language.  Few would be aware that everyday terms such as ‘ace in the hole’, ‘beats me’, ‘blue chip’, ‘call the bluff’, ‘cash-in’, ‘pass the buck’, ‘up the ante’, ‘when the chips are down’, ‘wild card’ and others all derive from poker jargon.

2005 Gambling Act

Eventually the government realised the status quo couldn't continue forever.  This wasn't just about taxing companies either, anyone could set up a website abroad and this offered little protection to UK customers under law.

In 2005 the UK government created a new independent body that answers to the Department of Culture, known as the Gambling Commission.  This body was set up to issue and regulate new UK gambling licences required by law under the new Act for any company wanting to provide gambling services (both offline and online) in the UK.

WSOP player stats indicate that after the Moneymaker wrote new pages in poker history, the number of participants grew from 839 to 2,576 in just a year. Even though Dan Harrington (the winner of the WSOP 1995) was the favourite for the prize, it went into the hands of Greg Raymer. Raymer went home with $5 million in prize money.

Bounty tournaments also known as Knockout tournaments are big hit. The one key difference compared to other types of poker tournaments is that in these games, you get a cash price for each player you knock out.

Normally in regular bounty tournaments ranging between 20 to 50% of their buy-in. In progressive knockout bounty tournaments the cash price for each player you knock out can differ. In those tournaments you win a certain portion of the bounty from the player you knock out directly and the portion left over is added towards your own bounty, so that bounties on players’ heads will increase while the tournament progresses.

Anticipate and adjust for better play: Since Bounty games are entertaining, it attracts a range of recreational poker players who might have little poker knowledge or strategy in mind when playing. So, expect to see some crazy bets all-in showdown in the early stages of the game. Adjustments will give you a better chance of gaining value from your made poker hands and therefore a lower success rate for bluffs.

Say no to Cooperation Plays: In normal poker tournaments, when you are close to the bubble, players will check-down a poker hand when a smaller stacked player is all-in. Bounty tournaments tend to eliminate this move except for some minor exceptions towards the end of the game.

When Small Stacks are added to the Pot: This move will provide you with plenty of opportunities to force the bigger stacks to fold and getting heads-up with the smaller stacks. If you see a big stack going all-in with weak hands to get smaller stacks, then you can look for spots to get all in.

Be above average with chips: Stay aggressive enough to be a little ahead of the majority of your opponents so when the big stacks happen, ensure that you get paid those bounties as well as the chips.

Keep an eye on the prize pool: Remember that the big money is at the final table. Make sure you don’t get side-tracked from this by the knockout battles earlier in the games.

1990's
