Treatment

Some people can stop gambling on their own. But many people need help to address their gambling problems. Only one in ten people with gambling disorder seek treatment.

Gambling affects people in different ways. Different approaches may work better for different people. Several types of therapy are used to treat gambling disorders, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, group therapy, and family therapy.

Counseling can help people understand gambling and think about how gambling affects them and their family. It can also help people consider options and solve problems.

There are no FDA-approved medications to treat gambling disorders. Some medications may help treat co-occurring conditions like depression or anxiety.

Support from family and friends can be critical to a person's recovery from gambling. However, only the individual can decide to stop the behaviors.

Counseling can help:

  • Gain control over your gambling.
  • Heal family relationships.
  • Deal with your urge to gamble.
  • Handle stress and other problems.
  • Find other things to do with your time.
  • Put your finances in order.
  • Maintain recovery and avoid triggers.

Anti-Money Laundering Requirements

The Anti-Money Laundering Code of Practice is 'interpretive guidance' to the Gibraltar gambling industry in respect of the requirements of the Act, the Gibraltar Proceeds of Crime Act, and the 4th EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive. This code applies to all financial transactions associated with defined gambling activities undertaken under the authority of a Gibraltar remote gambling licence.

The Anti-Money Laundering Code of Practice for the Non-Remote industry can be viewed here.

Some additional guidance on various topics has been prepared by the Gambling Division as part of its outreach to the sector and can be accessed here.

The National Coordinator for Anti-Money Laundering and the Combatting of Terrorist Financing has published a newsletter detailing the changes made to the Proceeds of Crime Act and subsidiary legislation, this can be found here.

A further newsletter has been published following amendments to POCA in order to address issues arising from the Moneyval evaluation, this can be found here.A copy of the latest iteration of Gibraltar's National Risk Assessment (2020) can be found here and an Executive Summary here. A copy of the latest iteration of the Commissioner's Risk Assessment of the gambling sector can be found here.

Licence Holders should also be aware of those jurisdictions deemed to be of higher risk in light of their AML/CFT deficiencies. The FATF regularly maintains and publishes a list of such jurisdictions. Those jurisdictions can be viewed here.

Malta

Malta’s gambling industry is booming. Today, the state is in great demand from those wishing to open their online casinos. This is due to the constant improvement of regulation of the online gambling legal industry and the desire of local authorities to attract more investors to this online gambling market. It is worth noting that Malta is the only country in the world where all types of gambling are allowed ( bookmakers, sports betting, etc.).

Europe

If we look at the online gambling market from the entrepreneur’s point of view, we understand: you won’t have enough just to create a company. It is necessary to get a license to perform its function because most of the gambling markets we are interested in require licensing. Moreover, a gambling license often comes with various bonuses. Such as tax benefits, relaxed control, or on the contrary. It requires special reporting – depending on the jurisdiction of the countries. Though when playing in Europe, one can get  authentic casino experience.

Gambling Law: An Overview

Gambling, though widespread in the United States, is subject to legislation at both the state and federal level that bans it from certain areas, limits the means and types of gambling, and otherwise regulates the activity.

Congress has used its power under the Commerce Clause to regulate interstate gambling, international gambling, and relations between the United States and Native American territories. For example, it has passed laws prohibiting the unauthorized transportation of lottery tickets between states, outlawing sports betting with certain exceptions, and regulating the extent to which gambling may exist on Native American land.

Each state determines what kind of gambling it allows within its borders, where the gambling can be located, and who may gamble. Each state has enacted different laws pertaining to these topics. The states also have differing legal gambling ages, with some states requiring the same minimum age for all types of gambling, while for others, it depends on the activity. For example, in New Jersey, an 18-year-old can buy a lottery ticket or bet on a horse race, but cannot enter a casino until age 21. Presumably, the age 21 restriction is due to the sale of alcohol in that location.

A standard strategy for avoiding laws that prohibit, constrain, or aggressively tax gambling is to locate the activity just outside the jurisdiction that enforces them, in a more "gambling friendly" legal environment. Gambling establishments often exist near state borders and on ships that cruise outside territorial waters. Gambling activity has also exploded in recent years in Native American territory. Internet-based gambling takes this strategy and extends it to a new level of penetration, for it threatens to bring gambling directly into homes and businesses in localities where a physical gambling establishment could not conduct the same activity.

Four tips for family members:

  1. Start by helping yourself. You have a right to protect yourself emotionally and financially. Don’t blame yourself for the gambler’s problems or let his or her addiction dominate your life. Ignoring your own needs can be a recipe for burnout.
  2. Don’t go it alone. It can feel so overwhelming coping with a loved one’s gambling addiction that it may seem easier to rationalize their requests “this one last time.” Or you might feel ashamed, feeling like you are the only one who has problems like this. Reaching out for support will make you realize that many families have struggled with this problem.
  3. Set boundaries in managing money. To ensure the gambler stays accountable and to prevent relapse, consider taking over the family finances. However, this does not mean you are responsible for micromanaging the problem gambler’s impulses to gamble. Your first responsibilities are to ensure that your own finances and credit are not at risk.
  4. Consider how you will handle requests for money. Problem gamblers often become very good at asking for money, either directly or indirectly. They may use pleading, manipulation, or even threats to get it. It takes practice to ensure you are not enabling your loved one’s gambling addiction.
Do’s and Don’ts for Partners of Problem Gamblers
Do…
  • Talk to your partner about their problem gambling and its consequences when you’re calm and not stressed or angry.
  • Look for support. Self-help groups for families of problem gamblers, such as Gam-Anon, for example, can introduce you to people who’ve faced the same obstacles.
  • Explain to your partner that you’re seeking help because of how their gambling affects you and the family.
  • Talk to your children about your partner’s problem gambling.
  • Take over management of your family finances, carefully monitoring bank and credit card statements.
  • Encourage and support your loved one during treatment of their gambling problem, even though it may be a long process peppered with setbacks.
Don’t…
  • Lose your temper, preach, lecture, or issue threats and ultimatums that you’re unable to follow through on.
  • Overlook your partner’s positive qualities.
  • Prevent your partner from participating in family life and activities.
  • Expect your partner’s recovery from problem gambling to be smooth or easy. Even when their gambling stops, other underlying problems may surface.
  • Bail your partner out of debt or enable their gambling in any way.
  • Cover-up or deny your partner’s problem to yourself or others.

    Blackjack and card counting

Card counting is legal in both the United Kingdom and the United States, with no law forbidding it. While card counting remains legal, casinos frown on it and will often remove counters if they are found. If you Google profitable games in every casino, the top result will almost always be blackjack.

To guarantee a win, all you have to know is how to count the cards in blackjack, which isn’t that difficult. Although counting cards is a talent that’ll require a lot of effort long term, it helps you conquer the blackjack gameplay and discover new opportunities and methods to make money through gambling.

People who are in control of their gambling habits play for fun and like the idea of possibly winning big. They set limits on how much money and time they can spend, and they are likely to gamble on the internet. But gambling is just one of several leisure activities these players undertake. In contrast, gambling is a form of escapism for problem players and often their only social activity, say Richard Wood of GamRes Ltd. in Canada, and Mark Griffiths of Nottingham Trent University in the UK. The results appear in Springer's Journal of Gambling Studies.

    advertisement

Their study is among the first to explore the strategies, attitudes and motivations of so-called "positive players" who are not at risk of becoming problem gamblers. Wood and Griffiths analyzed the results of an online survey completed by 1,484 positive players and 209 problem players.

Most previous harm-minimization research has focused on the negative aspects of problem gambling and uses a "stick" approach (i.e. don't play like this or else!). However, this study has helped to detail what non-problematic "positive play" looks like. This "carrot" approach (i.e. play like this and you are more likely to have a positive experience) may resonate with a wider range of players who ignore messages that focus on problem gambling, which they see as largely irrelevant to them.

Wood and Griffiths also found that the internet was by far the most popular medium, where up to 93 percent of the positive players in their study regularly gambled. This suggests that online gambling is not, by default, inherently riskier than gambling in more traditional ways. The National Lottery -- and especially its online version -- leads the popularity stakes, ahead of scratch cards (65.5 percent), sports betting (32.7 percent) and electronic games such as slot machines (28.5 percent).

Wood and Griffiths also found gambling is a form of entertainment for positive gamblers, who enjoy the dream of winning big. Those who play more also have more personal strategies in place to control their pastime. Nine out of ten respondents almost always decide on a spending limit before starting to gamble. Others decide beforehand how much money they can reasonably afford to lose, and also set a limit on their play time. Positive players also often only take a set amount of money with them when going to gamble in bars or casinos, and make a point of leaving their bank cards at home.

By contrast, problem gamblers play to find relief for a particular mood they are in, be it boredom, stress or feeling upset. It's about the actual experience of playing rather than the chance to win. In many cases it's their only social activity. Problem players are less likely than positive players to gamble on their own, such as on the internet, and were often likely to do so in a social setting along with family and friends.

"This might mean that the advice often given that social play is safer than gambling alone should be reconsidered," elaborates Wood.

"Positive players take personal responsibility for their pastime by using various strategies to ensure that they only gamble what they can afford to spend," adds Griffiths.

It’s interesting as I found two studies over the past few days that show Dogecoin and shiba Inu coins are the most popular on the net, beating bitcoin. Both reports were analysing Google Trends for searches, not acutally buying or use of crypto. Even so, the reports prove to be interesting.

The first report - actually there are two of them - focused upon which were the most googled cryptocurrencies in Europe and America.

According to the report, dogecoin was the most Googled cryptocurrency in the [USA]. Another study has covered similar data, but concentrated on the U.K.’s and Europe’s Google searches. According to the report, while bitcoin is the most popular crypto asset in Europe, the study of the trends shows that the meme token shiba inu is the most popular in the United Kingdom.

While bitcoin (BTC) was the top crypto across Europe, shiba Inu (SHIB) is the most popular cryptocurrency in the U.K., according to the researcher’s collected Google searches. The meme token SHIB saw a significant increase in popularity during the last 12 months. The study’s findings show SHIB commands six different countries and the United Kingdom. In fact, SHIB is huge in Russia, France, Spain, Ukraine, Italy, Hungary, and Switzerland, in terms of searches.

Additionally, ethereum (ETH) was the third most popular in the study capturing interest from Sweden, Czechia, Latvia, and Slovenia. Then cardano (ADA) held the fourth position in terms of GT search data, as Andorra, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria showed a lot of interest in ADA. With dogecoin (DOGE) being the most popular in the U.S., it is the fifth in Europe as the meme crypto is popular in Albania and Greece.

In the U.S. research study*, shiba inu (SHIB) only captured seven states across the country. Dogecoin was named the leader in that study as DOGE was the most popular in 23 states in the U.S., in terms of GT searches. SHIB’s popularity in the U.S., according to the data in that specific report, was ranked the fourth most popular crypto in the country.

Interestingly, and contradictorily, the other study found that Dogecoin is the most popular Google search in the UK.

The analysis revealed that Dogecoin had the highest number of regions wanting to invest in the cryptocoin with a total of five regions, including Yorkshire, East Midlands, West Midlands, East and South West. The rise in interest can be partially attributed to the endorsement of Elon Musk who stated in 2021 that Tesla would accept Dogecoin as a form of payment.

Bitcoin was the second most popular, when adjusted for population, with two regions searching to invest in Bitcoin more than any other cryptocurrency, including London and North West.

Litecoin was the third most popular, capturing the most interest in two regions; South East and North East.

The two runner-ups were Cardano and Monero.

Most revealing is who conducted the research.

The first study was by askgamblers.com.

“With 38 million crypto users in Europe, and thousands of cryptocurrencies on the market to choose from, it is fascinating to see which one people are the most interested in investing in,” a spokesperson from askgamblers.com told Bitcoin.com’s newsdesk. “Although bitcoin is the most popular overall, the interest in shiba inu has grown to surpass bitcoin in major countries such as Russia and the U.K.”

The second study was by CasinoGuide.co.uk:

“This study found that Dogecoin is the most popular cryptocurrency on the internet, surpassing Bitcoin. With more than 18,000 cryptocurrencies available globally, it is interesting to see that the currency with the least value is still the most sought after.”

Is someone saying that cryptocurrencies are actually not currencies at all, but just gambling** ...

    * The US study was by Coin Insider

** Implication is that crypo is investing and all investing is gambling, which is why I will add this disclaimer

The value of an investment may go down as well as up and you may not get back the money you invested. It should not be assumed that the value of investments always rises. You should ensure that you have the financial capacity to bear the risk and only invest an amount you are willing to lose.
