American Civil War

The U.S. Civil War was a violent and brutal event, pitting family members against each other. Experts estimate that more than 750,000 soldiers lost their lives between the Union and the Confederacy.

Many others lost limbs or sustained debilitating injuries. One can easily imagine poker as a way to get one’s mind off the loss of fellow soldiers, facing that same prospect yourself.

It wasn’t unusual to see soldiers around a table playing poker, trying to run up some of their meagre wages. These scenes were even depicted in photos from the time. Soldiers often faced hours and hours in camps waiting for the next battles. Many took up a bit of gambling to pass that time.

With many soldiers facing a significant chance of death, saving those earnings may not have seemed like a major priority. The photo above offers a step back in history as field officers in the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry take in a poker game.

The photo was taken in August 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, and offers insight into poker life in a Civil War camp. These Union soldiers are studying their cards with canvas tents to house troops visible in the background.

The men have their pipes lit up with a liquor bottle on the table. With the prospect of facing cannonballs and rifle fire soon, a friendly game of cards was a way to relax and take their minds off the reality of what was ahead.

Staff are quick to respond and fairly knowledgeable as long as your query is easy - although they seem to have no idea about payout limits and no interest in finding out either. To be honest some of the team members I have had interactions with have bordered on rude.

They also have a freephone number if you would rather be half assisted on the phone, although this has limited opening hours between 9am and midnight. The Twitter account is for offers and news rather than support.

There is an FAQ but, similarly to the terms in general, it is dense and full of contradictory information. It needs going through with a fine-tooth comb and making more user friendly. A lot of the FAQ articles half answer your question but then make you follow a link to another page for the rest of it, so it ends up feeling like you have fallen down the rabbit hole.

The site is available in 10 different languages, although I wouldn’t advise using them because it’s confusing enough as it is.

Customer Support

There is 24/7 support available at 888, which is fantastic news, although the phone line is only open 9am to midnight. Still, at least they have one, and it’s free to call.

E-mails should get a quick response if our experience is anything to go by, and the live chat is quick to connect if you can find it. We did find the chat operator to be a bit on the dim side we have to say, but we got there in the end.

They don’t make it easy to find live chat. We used a search engine initially but if you enter the cashier and linger then the live chat option should eventually pop up. They lose marks for this, it’s just annoying and is not a customer focused approach.

The FAQ, on the other hand, is a fantastic tool that is put together well and genuinely useful, with many articles linking to others that are similar to help you on your way. Chances are, whatever your query it will have been answered in there.

He is rated 8lb higher and going into deeper waters now but the yard is in flying form and conditions here shouldn’t hold any fears. There’s scope for plenty better than this mark with this improving six-year-old.
