Rhode Island

One mobile betting option

Rhode Island has been offering legal sports betting since 2018 when retail sportsbooks opened at its two commercial casinos.  William Hill (now owned by Caesars) is the only legal retail and online sportsbook in the state.

Lawmakers repealed an in-person mobile registration requirement, but the small population and lone legal option keep revenues small, despite Rhode Island’s proximity to Massachusetts.

Online Gambling Laws in Wyoming

The final state on our list of states that allow some sort of gambling. As of April 2021, mobile sports betting is legal and the first two sportsbooks launched in September 2021.

New York sports betting

New York began its legal sports betting status in 2019 with retail shops at its commercial and tribal casinos. In April 2021, Gov. Andrew Cuomo added an online sports betting piece to the state budget, which passed both houses. NY mobile sports betting went live in Jan. 2022 with Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers. BetMGM and PointsBet joined shortly after.

Online Casinos

West Virginia was one of the first states to legalize online sports betting and is, at present, one of the few to offer online casinos. There are four online casino options in the Mountain State, and more should be joining the group soon. The West Virginia Lottery Commission serves as the gambling regulator in the state and oversees all online casino sites there.

Check out our data sheet on West Virginia online casinos.

Nevada Online Gambling

Considering that Nevada is home to one of the most famous gambling cities in the world, the amount of legal online gambling here is limited to say the least.

The only active online gambling site is WSOP NV, so if you aren’t a fan of poker, you won’t be able to find sites that offer traditional casino games.

If you do enjoy playing online poker, WSOP pools players from New Jersey and Delaware to create bigger fields and offer bigger prize pools. In fact, the WSOP now includes online tournaments during the official World Series of Poker, giving players the chance to win a bracelet on the site.

    Sports Betting

Like Mississippi, you can bet on sports online in Montana, but you can only use one sports betting app, Sports Bet Montana, to place bets inside state lines, and you can only use the app while you are physically inside a retail sports betting outlet. Additionally, the site is a joint effort between the state lottery and its lottery provider, Intralot, and famously offers exceptionally uncompetitive odds for betting. It is not uncommon to see opening payout ratios hovering around -118, which is a massive markup over the industry’s standard -110.

    Online Gambling Laws in Vermont

One of the least friendly states when it comes to gambling of any kind, Vermont allows only charitable betting, state lotteries, and private social gambling. Bills have been proposed, but we’re awaiting real action from lawmakers.

States That Do Not Allow Online Gambling

Gambling is legal in some form or another in 48 states across the country. The two holdouts that ban it in its entirety are Utah and Hawaii. Utah has a large Mormon population, which is a deeply religious community. It’s only natural that the personal beliefs of the majority of residents affect local regulations. In Hawaii, there is a similar climate. There, it is not so much the religious aspect at play in the Islands of Aloha, but most residents’ opinion that it will affect family relations and atmosphere.

Other states that look down on the activity and have little to no interest in widening their legal framework to allow for betting at land-based or digital establishments include Wisconsin and Idaho.

The full list of states that currently provide a limited online gambling offer is as follows: Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

    New York

Full mobile betting with multiple options

New York launched online sports betting on, Jan. 8 2022, and has left almost every other state in the dust since then.

New York had retail sports betting at a handful of upstate commercial and tribal casinos, but these have generated little revenue despite the state’s massive population and gaming interest. That’s because online betting was not legalized.

But the time has come. Sports bettors can rejoice and bet from the comfort of their own homes instead of crossing bridges or going through tunnels to place their wagers.

In the meantime, New Jersey has essentially turned into “Vegas East” (with the help of New Yorkers coming across the border). We estimate that New York cost itself $1.3 billion in tax revenue by not legalizing when New Jersey did.

    Colorado

Full mobile betting with multiple options

Colorado took its first legal online and retail wagers in May 2020, six-months after voters narrowly approved sports betting during the November election.

Since then Colorado’s flourished into one of the most robust markets in the country, with 26 different apps, including DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM.

It was one of the first states to record more $200 million in monthly betting handle and in 2022 joined the top 6 states in dollars bet all-time.

Online sportsbooks must partner one of the Colorado’s 33 casinos to operate legally in the state, which has left  the door open for even more apps to come.

Colorado has one of the most operator-friendly setups in the country, though lawmakers have started tightening some loopholes low levels of tax revenue.

What Kind of Games Do They Have at Online Gambling Casinos in the US?

Most online US gambling websites offer a wide range of casino games, fantasy sports, and CSGO gambling.

Sports betting: Sports enthusiasts can sign up at the best sports betting sites and play a healthy range of sports games including NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, tennis, soccer, eSports, Boxing, and plenty of niche sports such as sumo wrestling and golf. At the best sports betting sites like BetOnline or Bovada, you can access a variety of sports markets.

Casino: Players in the US can play all kinds of games including slots, roulette, blackjack, craps, baccarat, poker, live dealer games, and more at Café Casino and Ignition.

Slots: You can spin the reels and stand a chance to win big in this game of chance. You get to play a variety of slot games such as video slots, jackpot slots, 3D slots, 3-reel slots, 5-reel slots, mobile slots, and more at Slots.lv and Super Slots.

Bingo: One of the US’s most popular casino games, featuring multi-card play and customizable daubers. Lady Luck will determine if your numbers are called, and Las Atlantis is the best place to access a variety of bingo games and gaming action.

    Cryptocurrency (Bitcoin)

Another way to fund gambling accounts without compromising your privacy is to use alternate forms of currency, sometimes called cryptocurrency, with the most popular and available option being Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a form of digitalized currency that was first released in 2009 and has grown tremendously in virtually every market since. It first gained popularity on the “darknet” simply because no personal information is tied to the account when transacting. It is another type of eWallet with optimal anonymity. Some people really value this and online casinos started recognizing that.

Legally, it is a little ambiguous as to whether or not Bitcoin transactions are in the same class as regular eWallet transactions, and so, for now, there is no formal legislation on its use in the online gambling sector. There are many online Bitcoin casinos, some specifically marketing themselves to American gamblers, for this reason. Bitcoin is easy to use and once you have your account established, funds can be transferred just like an eWallet.

The beauty of Bitcoin is that transactions are essentially very difficult to trace. This is made possible by its “decentralized” network where no one’s information is kept on a single server for too long and personalized credentials are nearly impossible for anyone to decipher. Bitcoin currencies do change in value over time, although historically, this value has only increased.

Regardless of which method you choose to fund and withdraw from your online gambling account, one thing remains clear: the primary methods listed in this article are all safe and easy to use. Depending on the legislation in your region, you may be limited to one over the other, but for now, the primary methods of funding are easily accessible to most. Do your research and find out what works best for you.

Currently, state-licensed US gambling sites/apps don’t offer players the ability to deposit or withdraw in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

States Where Online Gambling is Illegal

Gambling isn’t viewed as a bit of fun in two states in particular: Hawaii and Utah. Although there is a little more leeway for gambling in Hawaii, the state of Utah comes crashing down heavily on any form of gaming that results in gaining or losing money. Here, we’ll detail the state’s respective laws as best we can:

    Tennessee

Full mobile betting with multiple options

Since it has no casinos, Tennessee is the only state with online-only sports betting. The conservative state’s unlikely launch of an uncapped, digital sports betting market excited industry stakeholders, but other restrictions could hurt its potential.

Tennessee is the only state that makes the operators return a 10% hold –the percentage of bets taken that books win. Since typical hold is around 5-7% in most states, mandating a 10% hold could mean worse odds for bettors in Tennessee.

How to Gamble Online With a VPN

4 aces cards over a laptopIf you’re traveling to a country where online gambling isn’t allowed, the only secure way to access your usual online gambling sites is by using a VPN. With a VPN service, you can route your internet connection through a server in your country of origin, or a country with more permissive gambling laws, such as the UK or the US. This means you can access online websites without being blocked because of your location.

VPNs have the added benefit of obscuring your actual location and encrypting your internet connection, making it very difficult for your activities to be tracked or monitored by others.

    Pennsylvania Online Gambling Payment Methods

Payment methods for the Pennsylvania online gambling sites since it was legalized by the state in 2018.

It remains to be seen what payment methods will be available at the new online gambling sites in Pennsylvania. The options may be similar to the PA iLottery payment methods, or payments may be structured similar to New Jersey’s online casinos.

    • VIP Preferred ACH e-check
    • PayPal
    • Visa/Mastercard
    • Play+ prepaid card
    • PayNearMe Cash
    • iLottery WebCash (Purchased with cash or debit card at any Pennsylvania Lottery retailer.)

    Other U.S. States

Several other U.S. states host iLottery sites, but other forms of online gambling have not been legalized in those states yet.

    U.S. Online Casino Payment Methods

Online bank transfers move funds directly from your bank account to your online player account using your bank’s online banking portal. Your bank account information is not shared with online gambling sites or third-party payment providers. After selecting the online bank transfer options, deposit transactions are made entirely within your online banking environment,

Not all banks in regulated markets support online bank transfers for deposits, so you will need to check with your online casino or bank for availability.

    • BB&T
    • Chase
    • PNC

    Wire Transfers

Compared to online banking transfers, wire transfers can be cumbersome and slow. Wire transfers do still have their place, however, as they are widely accepted at regulated gambling sites in the U.S. for deposits and withdrawals, and wire transfers offer some unique benefits compared to online bank transfers. For example, GoldenNugget in New Jersey does not place a maximum withdrawal limit on wire transfers.

    Wire Transfer Overview:

    • Widely accepted at regulated gambling sites in the U.S.
    • All banks offer wire transfer options.
    • No instant deposit options.

    • Rely heavily on check-based banking.
    • Prefer paper transactions instead of electronic transactions.
    • Do not have a bank account. (Physical checks can be cashed at check cashing service locations.)

PayNearMe services are available for a variety of payment types nationwide, however, PayNearMe Cash payments for online gambling deposits are only accepted in regulated states.

    PayNearMe Cash Overview:

    • Accepted at most regulated gambling sites in the U.S.
    • Make convenient cash deposits at thousands of retail payment locations in regulated U.S. states.
    • Very high success rate for online deposits.
    • No or low fees due at the point of deposit payment ($0 – $5.99), depending on the size of the deposit and the casino.
    • No PayNearMe account needed to make deposit payments.
    • Cash payments must be made at a retail location.
    • Deposits are not instant, but the money is usually available within minutes.
    • Low daily deposit limit of $500.
    • Deposit method only.
    • For cash players in New Jersey, PayNearMe retail locations may be more convenient than Cash@Casino Cage options in Atlantic City.

    Cash At Casino Cage

Similar to PayNearMe, Cash At Casino Cage allows players to use cash for online gambling payments. Unlike PayNearMe, however, the Cash At Casino Cage payment method works for both deposits and withdrawals and the daily limits are much higher.

For example, the Golden Nugget online casino offers a $100,000 daily maximum for Cash At Casino Cage transactions compared to a $500 daily maximum deposit with PayNearMe Cash.

The catch is that you must make the transactions in person at the casino cage in Atlantic City that is linked to your online casino in New Jersey. It is a popular and convenient payment method for people who have easy access to Atlantic City and prefer cash transactions.

    Cash At Casino Cage Overview:

    • Cash only deposits and withdrawals for online gambling.
    • Available at all online gambling sites licensed in New Jersey.
    • Available at all online sports betting sites licensed in Nevada.

    • Very high deposit and withdrawal limits.

    PayPal

PayPal boasts a long history as a preferred payment method in the U.S., thanks to its origins as the payment of choice for ebay. PayPal remains the most popular e-wallet in the U.S. and it is accepted at most regulated U.S. online gambling sites for instant deposits and withdrawals.

    • Deposits require an additional login to your PayPal account.

    Skrill

Another well-known global e-wallet option, Skrill is not as widely used in the U.S. as PayPal, and Skrill’s terms are generally less favorable than PayPal’s for U.S. players. Skrill’s fees for funding accounts can be pretty hefty, depending on the funding method you choose. For example, fees for funding via ACH are 2.5% and 2.9% for Mastercard/Visa, but bank transfers are free.

    Skrill Overview:

    • Accepted by a limited number of regulated sites in the U.S.
    • Deposit and withdrawal method.
    • Instant deposits at online gambling sites.

Are real money gambling sites legit, safe, and secure? Can you really win money, and if so, how do you deposit and withdraw money? We get it – because we had the same questions when we started gambling online for real money over 15 years ago. We decided to build the online gambling guide that we wished we would have had when we started researching how to gamble online.

After nearly two decades of playing at various real money casinos, poker sites, and sportsbooks we’ve come to learn one important fact – it’s hard (if not impossible) for a new online player to feel confident and secure when selecting an online casino or betting site unless they’ve put in hours of research ahead of time. The longer you’re in the iGaming industry, the easier it is to spot untrustworthy online gambling operators and scams.

Below you’ll find the best ranked (overall) online gambling sites that have real money casino games, sports betting, and poker.

    Michigan

Full mobile betting with multiple options

Michigan launched in-person wagering at the MGM Grand Detroit on March 11, 2020. Online sportsbooks, including BetMGM and DraftKings launched in early 2021. It now has a total of 15, the maximum allowed under state law.

Home to 7 million over the age of 21 and teams in every major-league sport, Michigan has quickly become one of the top betting states, regularly finishing among the top 10 in monthly handle.

It ranks 7th among states in dollars bet all-time, right behind Colorado. It’s also one of the few states where iGaming is legal.

Despite the proliferation of betting across the mid-west in recent years, and a new market on the way in Ohio, Michigan’s operator-friendly rules should keep it atop the leaders in sports betting for years to come.

    Iowa

Full mobile betting with multiple options

Iowa started accepting bets on Aug. 15, 2019 and has methodically grown since.

Home to a dozen plus online sportsbooks, Iowa has some of the cheapest licensing fees in the land — $45,000 for the first year and a $10,000 every year after that.

Its monthly handle saw an immediate boost in 2021, after an in-person registration requirement expired for good. It now takes in between $100,000 to $300,000 in bets month-to-month.

Though Iowa has a smaller in population and has no professional sports teams, it’s one of the more lucrative per capita markets in the country and benefits from sharing boarders with multiple states yet to legalize.

New York State Flag New York

    Are American Online Casinos Safe?

Yes, online casinos for US players are safe. For over 10 years, OUSC has helped readers find legit gambling sites. All the top online casinos we recommend have passed a comprehensive audit to ensure the safety of players.

What States Have Online Gambling That Is Legal?

Now, there are several states that have opened the door, realizing that there is an opportunity to take advantage of online gambling. A lot of states want to have online gambling because it makes it easier to regulate, reducing the chances of someone getting hurt while playing. In addition, having online gambling available opens the door to additional tax revenue, which a lot of states desperately require. Some of the states that have legalized online gambling include Connecticut, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey, and Nevada. In these locations, there are several forms of online gambling that have been legalized, including online poker and certain casino games.

What Kind of Bonuses Will I Find at the Best Online Casinos?

The most common bonus you’ll find is the welcome bonus. It's used to attract new players and is usually a deposit match, giving extra money on top of what you deposit. Some online casinos will also add free spins you can use on online slots. It’s rare ― but not impossible ― that casinos offer no deposit bonuses, which give you free spins or free cash for creating an account.

To retain the new players, operators will often offer a loyalty program, giving rewards for playing their games. In addition, casinos may create promotions to advertise new games or give away cash prizes for referring a friend. The tournaments are also a good way to get extra rewards.

You should always check the T&Cs before accepting an offer since they can come with various conditions like wagering requirements or being available for a designed game or section of the site.
