This genre has been declining slightly for the last couple of years. Rare releases of super hits, such as Mario Kart Tour, give it a temporary boost from time to time, but the overall trend is still downward.

There was one notable newcomer in 2021 though: No Limit Drag Racing 2, whose name clearly indicates its subgenre and the fact that it’s a spin-off. The game managed to maintain a high level of both revenue and downloads for the rest of the year and took the second position in both charts in the Drag Racing subgenre.

The number of new Western releases in the Racing genre is pretty high: 130 in 2021. It used to be even higher though, having peaked with 367 games in 2019.

#3: Match-3

We’ve already covered Match-3 in the revenue section. But if we focus on downloads, we’ll notice one interesting newcomer: Love Fantasy: Match & Stories. The game was originally released in Mar 2021, but only started scaling in Nov, and by the end of the year became #1 in the genre in Tier-1 West, leaving behind King, Playrix, Magic Tavern and others!

   The driving force behind online expansion has been the steady growth of sports betting. When measured from the date of the Supreme Court's May 2018 decision in Murphy v.    When Is The Best Time To Volunteer?

   Since Gansbaai is a hotspot for great white sharks, it is possible to see the animals year-round, no matter what the season. That said, each season does vary in terms of visibility and ‘no-sea’ days; you can read more about this below.

   Peak season: April-October Visibility is at its best during the peak season, averaging between 2-5 metres, as opposed to 1.5-2.5 metres at other times of the year. The feeding pattern of Gansbaai’s sharks is also most active during this season, which can make for fantastic viewing! That said, this is also the winter season, which means that stormy weather may result in fewer days out at sea.

   High season: November-December The high season sees decent visibility, and the weather can be somewhat variable. Volunteers during this season may be lucky enough to go out to sea more often than those who choose to volunteer during the peak season, however, there may be fewer sharks per viewing – though this unpredictability is part of the adventure, and that first glimpse of a shark is made all the more exciting!

   Intermediate season: January-March The weather is at its best during this season, and time spent out at sea can be glorious: clear skies, steady seas, and a low chance of rain make for an enjoyable time on the water. Shark sightings during this time are somewhat variable, but as with all wild encounters, nothing is ever guaranteed.

   Finally, it is important to point out that there are numerous other factors that affect shark visibility. For example, the presence of other marine species can impact the number of sharks seen around Gansbaai’s waters, and instances such as an influx of orcas can keep fearful sharks at bay. While this project does focus primarily on sharks, there are some volunteers who are interested in seeing other species during their time in South Africa. In this case, May-November is a brilliant time to volunteer as southern right whales congregate in the area to mate and to calve, making for an unforgettable experience should you be lucky enough to witness them!

   Getting There

   You will need to arrive into Cape Town Airport on the start date of your project where you will be met and taken to a backpacker's hostel for the first night. The next morning, you will be transferred to the project location in Kleinbaai, which is approximately a two-hour drive from Cape Town. Transfers to and from Cape Town are included in the project cost, however, if you are not travelling back to Cape Town after the project you will need to arrange and pay for your own transfer.

   The return transfer is a group transfer and volunteers are returned to Cape Town on the client bus, which usually leaves at 9am. On occasion, this transfer can be later in the day, so we recommend booking a flight that departs after 5pm on your final day. If you book a flight late on in the evening, it is possible to leave your luggage at the hostel whilst exploring Cape Town for the afternoon.

   Visa Requirements

   Citizens of most countries, including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and most of those within the EU, do not need to obtain a visa to enter South Africa and are granted entry for up to 90 days upon arrival. You will, however, need at least 2 blank pages in your passport for the immigration officials to use and your passport must be valid for a period of at least 6 months from your date of entry.

   If you are unsure of your individual visa requirements, we recommend speaking to your local South African embassy at least 2 months prior to travel.

   Fitness & Skills

   We recommend that you come with a moderate level of fitness, as volunteers are involved with all aspects of work during their time on the project, including bait preparation and cage deployment. No specific skills are required and all we ask is that you come with a strong work ethic and have a love and passion for sharks and the ocean. You will be taught the rest!

   Vaccinations

   The vaccinations required will depend on your medical history. We recommend that you consult with your GP/Doctor regarding your own immunisation needs.

   #2: Games for Kids

   Games for Kids is a pretty broad definition that includes multiple subgenres. But none of them is currently dominating the others; the market for the games of this kind is very versatile; and the number of apps that perform pretty well is very large here. The number of new Western releases is also very large: 302 in 2021.

   Despite the large number of new games that came out, there were not a lot of them that managed to grow big and maintain their positions. We’d only like to highlight two: PAW Patrol Rescue World and YOYO Doll: Dress up games.

   On the whole, the genre was doing quite stable in 2021 in the Tier-1 West region, averaging about 40M monthly. For comparison, the worldwide numbers are 10-fold.

   #8: Farms

   This block is probably  the most interesting part of our research. Farms really stand out from the genres we’ve already mentioned.

   Firstly, the market has been steadily growing over the last several years. Secondly, major contributors of this growth are new titles. These are strong titles that are here to stay: they keep on growing for months in revenue and maintain a high pace of acquiring new users. We are talking about a genre that is traditionally monopolized, where market leaders emerge and change each other extremely rarely. At least, it used to be so for many years (have a look at the graph above).

   One of the heavy contributors to the growth of the farming games market is Family Island by a Belarusian studio Melsoft Games Ltd. It’s a conventional farm game with an exploration mechanic and a solid storyline, somewhat similar to the hit farm game that set this standard, the Klondike Adventures by another Belorusian studio Vizor Games.

   

   Another major contributor is Family Farm Adventure by China’s Century Games Publishing. It can also be called a follower of the Klondike Adventures’ paradigm. It’s a debutant in the top charts; it was released this very year in February and has already managed to grab 8% of the farm games market in Tier-1 West in terms of revenue in Dec 2021. The cumulative revenue of farm games in the region was $62M monthly by the end of the year.

   The last noteworthy fact about Farms is that the number of new Western releases is small: just 9 new Farms this year. This number also used to be small in previous years. So it looks like there’s much less competition compared to other top grossing genres. That’s something to think about.

5. Players Spend Nearly $103 Million on Roblox in May 2020

   In terms of player spending, the data published by Sensor Tower shows a consistent increase between February and May 2020. Players spent $54.6 million in February, rising to $69.8 million in March and $93.2 million in April. In May, the figure rose to $102.9 million, marking the biggest month on record.

   Lifetime player spending on the Roblox mobile app crossed the $1.5 billion milestone towards the end of June 2020. At the height of the global pandemic, revenue surged in double digits, 28% month-over-month in March and 34% in April.

   Most of the revenue, almost $1.2 billion, came from the Apple App Store. It accounted for 75.4% of all lifetime player spending at the end of June 2020. Google Play Store accounted for the remaining 24.6%, which was at $389.2 million.

   Players using iPad were the top spenders, accounting for 39.4% of the total lifetime revenue or $623.8 million.

   At the time, the Roblox app had accumulated nearly 383 million downloads across the two app stores. Google Play had the dominant role in this regard with 287 million downloads, 75% of the total. On the other hand, the App Store had 96 million downloads, 25% of the total. On average, each download raked in $4.10 in revenue globally.

   The US was the apps’ top market with 104.6 million downloads, accounting for 27.3% of the total. Brazil took the second place with 10.7% of the global share while Russia was third with 5.4%.

   According to App Annie, Roblox ranked second in terms of consumer spend globally in Q2 2020. Its games had the highest quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) growth in the adventure category in that period. In Q3 2020, it has the 4th highest grossing game globally on both the App Store and Play Store according to Sensor Tower.

   Overall, there was a remarkable spike in video game consumption in the US during Q2 2020. According to the NPD Group, consumers spent $11.6 billion, marking a 30% increase YoY. Compared to the Q1 2020 record of $10.9 billion, that was a 7% increase.

   Interstate Horseracing Act

   The Interstate Horseracing Act (IHA) was enacted in 1978:

   to regulate interstate commerce with respect to wagering on horseracing, in order to further the horseracing and legal off-track betting industries in the United States.38

   It provides that:

   [n]o person may accept an interstate off-track wager except as provided in this [Act].39

   The IHA was amended in 2000 to clarify that it permits remote wagering over the phone, internet or other electronic media.40 The statute now defines an 'interstate off-track wager' as a:

   legal wager placed or accepted in one state with respect to the outcome of a horserace taking place in another state and includes pari-mutuel wagers, where lawful in each state involved, placed or transmitted by an individual in one state via telephone or other electronic media and accepted by an off-track betting system in the same or another state.41

   Thus, an interstate pari-mutuel wager placed or transmitted by an individual customer is an 'interstate off-track wager' permitted under the IHA if it meets two requirements:

   1. it must be 'lawful in each state involved'; and
   2. it must be accepted by an 'off-track betting system'.

   These systems must be 'conducted by the state or licensed and otherwise permitted by state law.'42

   The IHA also sets forth a framework for the agreements that are required with host racetracks in order to permit simulcasts of the races and the acceptance of wagers on those races.43 The IHA requires the consent of five different parties for any off-track wagering agreement.44

   There has been much discussion in the academic literature and among gaming lawyers as to the relationship between the IHA, which permits interstate off-track wagers, and the Wire Act, which prohibits them (as a species of sporting event). The US Department of Justice has taken the position – although only in public statements, never in an actual prosecution – that the Wire Act prohibition continues to apply, notwithstanding the IHA.

   By contrast, the consensus of most scholars and practitioners in the space – and that of the authors – is that the IHA, as both the more specific and more recent statute, trumps the Wire Act ban, so long as the wager complies with the IHA's requirements. Indeed, for quite some time, the advance-deposit-wager industry has broadly accepted online horse race wagers pursuant to the statute on precisely that premise, and the federal government has taken no steps to stop that activity.

Again we are being simplistic but there have been reports of some of these scenarios that no doubt resulted (or at least contributed to) crunch. Internet sweepstakes cafes operate in a number of ways – most often, by selling internet time to patrons and sometimes by offering other copying, faxing and related services. Along with the purchase of internet time, patrons receive entry into sweepstakes. In most cases, patrons can obtain a limited number of free sweepstakes entries on a daily basis, either upon request in person or by mailing a form. (This feature is designed to remove the element of consideration from the transaction, and therefore to take the activity outside the purview of most state gambling laws.) Patrons often play simulated gambling games on their computer terminals to reveal winning sweepstakes entries.

When these cafes are prosecuted under standard gambling law principles, they are generally convicted as mere subterfuges for unlawful gambling activity, since evidence shows that patrons' primary motivation in purchasing internet time is to play the sweepstakes, rather than to use the internet and other available services.71 Indeed, the purchased time often goes unused – not surprisingly, since Wi-Fi and other forms of internet access are broadly available, often without charge or fee. Nonetheless, state legislatures, alarmed by the proliferation of these cafes, in many states have passed legislation specifically targeting them. At times, those statutes are worded quite expansively and may carry with them unanticipated consequences for other, more innocuous activities.72

#7: Sports Games

The genre also did quite typically, with no special ups and downs, but take note of  several very big phenomena.

Firstly, Retro Bowl. The game was originally released in Jan 2020, but it didn’t get any visibility until Sep 2021 when it suddenly boomed: it started growing very fast, having generated 4M downloads in October alone in Tier-1 West (actually, 95% of downloads came from the US). These numbers don’t look outstanding for Hypercasual games and some other genres, but Sports Games hadn’t seen such numbers in the region for a long long time.

Its rate of new downloads then went down quite fast, but this case can still be called outstanding.

In late November, we saw another rocket of the same scale: a newly published Rocket League Sideswipe showed an even more phenomenal growth with 12M downloads in December 2021 alone in Tier-1 West (24M worldwide).

The game doesn’t actually refer to any real sports game, but resembles soccer. Instead of human players, you control flying cars. Doing a good shot requires some skill and thinking. The game can be played 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2. All these make it feel like an actual sports game.

The number of new downloads started declining right in December. Nevertheless, the introduction of Rocket League Sideswipe will remain a notable mark in history, together with Retro Bowl: just look at them in the Sports Games track record!
