Any laying-the-hammer takes from CHI vs SF

The conditions in Chicago were hideous leading into the game. Guys were running in pre-game warmup with little puddles splashing in their wake. It didn’t get better; frankly, it became much worse late in the contest.

I know folks want to write the book on Justin Fields and Trey Lance as quickly as possible but everything from this game has to be taken with a massive grain of salt. Each of them had their moments — especially Fields — but he might have just gotten the best breaks in the timing of the rain. You do have to give him credit for creating big gaps in the 49ers' secondary with his mobility and rocketing a few strong deep throws.

We’ll know a lot more about these two young passers (mostly Lance) when we see them in better conditions. This was a mess.

Governing bodies will continue to assess any possible impact the Queen’s funeral on September 19 could have with scheduled fixtures and events, the PA news agency understands.

All football fixtures in the UK were postponed this weekend, along with Friday and Saturday’s planned horse racing meetings, as a mark of respect following the Queen’s death on Thursday.

However, many other sporting occasions went ahead, offering spectators and participants opportunities to pay their respects.

In the Test match between England and South Africa at the Kia Oval, players wore black armbands and there was a rendition of God Save the King.

On day three at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, a two-minute period of silence was held, while there were also tributes ahead of the Betfred Super League Play-Off Eliminator between Huddersfield and Salford as well as Gallagher Premiership matches.

The official mourning guidance, published by the Government on Friday morning, stated there was no obligation on sports organisations to cancel or reschedule events.

As it stands, the scheduled English Football League programme is set to recommence on Tuesday.

However, PA understands there maybe resourcing issues, particularly in respect of policing, associated with some fixtures which will need to be discussed on a fixture-by-fixture basis over the period ahead, in line with each local authority’s Safety Advisory Group protocols.

Millwall are set to play two home games next week, against QPR on Wednesday and Blackpool on Saturday.

The Lions stressed there was currently no obligation for any postponement of fixtures next week and the intention was to fulfil them as scheduled.

However, Millwall accept the additional pressure on staging events around the capital during the period of official national mourning could prove challenging.

“There are, however, considerable demands on police resources at this unprecedented time – particularly in London – and such pressures are extending into the stewarding industry,” a Millwall statement read.

“The club is conscious of the impact of these factors, but is working tirelessly to overcome such hurdles in order to meet the necessary safety regulations required to host the two matches as planned.

“This is a very unique and challenging time for the country and for so many different industries and as such situations are dynamic and ever-changing.”

In a statement confirming the weekend’s postponements, the Premier League said further updates regarding fixtures during the period of mourning will “be provided in due course”.

PA understands that position has not changed following confirmation the Queen’s funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on September 19, which will be a public Bank Holiday.

The next set of Premier League games are on Friday night, when Aston Villa host Southampton and Fulham travel to Nottingham Forest.

In London, Tottenham take on Leicester at 5.30pm, while Sunday’s fixtures see Brentford play Arsenal at 2pm while Chelsea are at home to Liverpool in the 4.30pm live broadcast slot.

Discussions with UEFA are ongoing with regard to the scheduled European fixtures next week involving British clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and European Conference League.

Manchester City maintain the game against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday is definitely on.

Arsenal are confident their Europa League fixture against PSV Eindhoven will be played at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night and Manchester United have confirmed their trip to Sheriff Tiraspol will go ahead as scheduled.

The opening round of Gallagher Premiership fixtures did take place, with both games which were set for Friday evening pushed back into the weekend.

PA understands the Super League ‘Man of Steel’ awards which had been scheduled for September 19 are likely to be rescheduled to another week day.

There will be no racing in Britain on the day of the Queen’s funeral.

The British Horseracing Authority confirmed on Saturday evening that the September 19 meetings scheduled for Hamilton, Leicester, Warwick and Wolverhampton will be cancelled as a mark of respect.

I love a good RPG as much as the next person, but I often struggle to recommend them to people. Most of my friends just don’t have fifty hours in their busy lives to grind away at an epic JRPG, and it’s hard to blame them for that. Fortunately for all of you with limited free time, Jack Move has arrived with the ultimate eight-to-ten hour RPG experience.

In the neon dystopia of Jack Move, corporations have taken over the role of the government and that’s worked out as well as you’d expect. A young hacker called Noa has a tough life in the slums, but with the power of her Deck and genius friend Ryder, she’s determined to cause some chaos and make life hard for the megacorp Monolife while she’s at it.

This carefree way of life doesn’t last long though, as her estranged father is kidnapped and all signs point to Monolife. The story is gripping from start to finish, with a colourful cast of relatable characters driving the narrative forward. There are complex relationships explored in the short run time, as well some poignant themes of loss throughout that are counterbalanced with a bit of lighthearted banter.

A screenshot of Jack Move

Once the banter is over though, it’s time for battle. Combat is turn-based, and features Noa singlehandedly facing all manner of security personnel and creatures with the power of Software. In Jack Move Software is essentially your magic, with elemental attacks split into the three categories of Cyberware, Electroware, and Wetware. These “elemental” types beat each other in a Rock Paper Scissors style, and enemies are handily colour coded so you know which move to use against them.

You can only have so much Software installed at once though, so there’s a good chance you won’t have all the abilities you need for a random battle. That’s where the Install function comes in, which allows you to swap your loadout to suit the situation mid battle. It can really help to switch out useless moves for buffs and healing, but when you’re in the middle of a tense boss fight, using up that precious turn might be risky.

As well as all your attack Software, healing Software, and debuffs, you also have powerful Jack Moves to unleash. These attacks can be used when your Jack Move meter fills up from dealing and taking enough damage, and feature a little timing mini game that helps determine the damage they deal. It’s always worth using these massive attacks the moment they become available, not just because they end fights quickly by hitting everybody, but because the more you use them the stronger they get.

A screenshot of Jack Move

It’s not just different super moves and Software you need to keep track of though, you also need to equip Hardware. You have three slots for Hardware, and each piece you slot in powers you up massively. There’s Hardware that gives you extra RAM slots for Software, Hardware that boosts your stats, and even Hardware that makes Noa perform a counterattack every time she gets hit. It’s well worth heading down to the store and spending your hard earned coin on these handy upgrades.

You’re never really told that the one store in the slums has almost every single piece of Hardware and Software available from the start of the game, albeit with level requirements to purchase. Once you hit level five you’ll be able to buy dozens of different chips, and although it’s a little overwhelming it’s fun to start making decisions about how to kit Noa out.

There isn’t a whole lot more to Jack Move, but although it’s a fairly simple RPG it’s incredibly refined. All of the goodness of an epic SNES JRPG like Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger has been distilled into this dinky adventure, and there wasn’t a single moment I stopped grinning from ear to ear while playing it. I’m not sure how developer “So Romantic” managed to fit an engaging story, exciting and constantly evolving combat, and interesting boss fights into such a small package, but by Jove they did it.

A screenshot of Jack Move

I should also mention that alongside everything else, the visuals and soundtrack are absolutely banging as well. The character models took a while to grow on me, but the vibrant cyberpunk environments had me drooling from the offset. The music is just perfect for the setting too, with synthy, electronic tunes that got well and truly stuck in my head. If you don’t love the victory music especially, I don’t think we can be friends.

Jack Move is a spectacular game, but it has a few little niggles. Most side quests you get from random NPCs are pretty lackluster, and often just reward you with a few consumables you already have dozens of. The random battles will feel a bit archaic for some too, but admittedly the ability to change their frequency or turn them off altogether does alleviate that somewhat.

Jack Move is a lovely bitesize RPG that gripped me from start to finish, with a heartfelt story, fantastic combat, and a hell of a soundtrack. The random battles won’t please everyone, but with so little else to complain about this RPG is an absolute must play for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre.

Every injury, no matter how unwelcome, brings opportunity. And for all the frustration that Jonny Bairstow, England’s outstanding batsman of the summer, will miss the deciding Test against South Africa – and the Twenty20 World Cup to boot – there is a certain excitement too. After a summer in which he has been ever-present in England’s Test squad, Harry Brook will belatedly make his Test debut at the Oval.

It will cap a summer in which, aged 23, Brook has established himself in England’s thoughts with the red and white ball alike.

While he has only played four T20 internationals, Brook’s adaptability, power and range of shots won him selection in England’s World Cup squad. And, though he has not played a 50-over match since 2019 – due to a combination of Covid-19 and the Royal London One-Day Cup clashing with the Hundred – Brook’s gifts would seem an easy fit for the one-day game too.

In an age when the formats are rapidly diverging, Brook has the tools to be one of a diminishing breed: a three-format international cricketer. For now, such thoughts can wait: there is a Test series to help England win.

For batsmen elevated from the County Championship to the Test game, the two most fundamental differences are the quality and volume of spin bowled and how quick the pace bowling is.

In his initiation to Test cricket, Brook will confront both. While South Africa will probably revert to a token spinner at The Oval, Keshav Maharaj is a high-class operator who, with his flight, drift and turn, will challenge Brook in a way that few slow bowlers on the county circuit do.

In county cricket, under one per cent of deliveries from pace bowlers are over 87mph, as documented in the book Hitting Against the Spin. Across all Test cricket, this swells to 17 per cent. The challenge of speed is ramped up further against this South African attack: this series, 35 per cent of deliveries from their pace bowlers have been over 87mph, a challenge of a completely different order to that in County Championship cricket.

For Brook, the test posed by the Proteas will be particularly great if, as expected, Marco Jansen returns to the XI. A 6ft 8in left-arm quick who can reach 90mph amounts to a unique challenge in world cricket. It is one that could be tailor-made to exploit the greatest vulnerability in Brook’s first-class record: he has been dismissed 12 times by left-arm quicks, averaging only 20 against them.

And yet, if few Test debuts have come against such a formidable attack, there is reason to believe that Brook can cope. His selection has been emphatically earned through consistent scoring in the shires: Brook averages 56 for Yorkshire since the start of 2020. This season that has soared to 107, scored at a rapid strike-rate of 76 runs apiece.
