What does the law require?

Under the Gambling Act 2005, gambling operators selling into the British market must have a Gambling Commission licence to transact with, and advertise to, British consumers. The Commission’s Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice require operators to comply with the Advertising Codes, administered by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The Codes are designed to ensure that gambling adverts do not:

• portray, condone or encourage gambling behaviour that is socially irresponsible or could lead to financial, social or emotional harm.
• exploit the susceptibilities, aspirations, credulity, inexperience or lack of knowledge of children, young persons or other vulnerable persons.
• suggest that gambling can be a solution to financial concerns.
• link gambling to seduction, sexual success or enhanced attractiveness.
• be of particular appeal to children or young persons, especially by reflecting or being associated with youth culture.
• feature anyone gambling or playing a significant role in an advert if they are under 25 years old (or appear to be under 25).

Adverts that breach the Codes have to be amended or withdrawn. If serious or repeated breaches occur, the ASA can refer advertisers to the Gambling Commission and broadcasters to Ofcom.

Concerns about advertising

Gambling advertising has increased substantially since the 2005 Act came into force. This has led to concerns about its impact on children, young people, and vulnerable adults. The relationship between gambling and sport has come under particular scrutiny.

What is the gambling industry doing?

The Betting and Gaming Council represents around 90% of the UK’s betting and gaming industry (excluding lotteries). Its Code of Conduct requires adherence to an Industry Code for Socially Responsible Advertising.

What is the Government doing? 

The Government has said that the rules on gambling and advertising must be “suited to the digital age”. The Gambling Act Review sought views on, among other things, the impacts of gambling advertising. The Review ran from 8 December 2020 to 31 March 2021 and received approximately 16,000 submissions. In a PQ response of 1 March 2022, the DCMS said that a response would be published in the “coming months”.

The Betfred World Championship is snooker’s biggest tournament and one of the greatest sporting events on the planet, with an international audience of 500 million.

It brings together the world’s top 16 players, plus 16 more who battle through the qualifying rounds. The final stages run for 17 days at the famous Crucible.

Betfred first sponsored the tournament in 2009.

What Is The WSOP Super Circuit Online Series?

The WSOP Super Circuit Online Series will consist of “hundreds” of individual poker events and the winner of 18 headline tournaments will receive a World Series Of Poker circuit ring.

World Snooker Championships postponed until August

The World Snooker Championship, hosted at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield city centre, has been rescheduled to run from July 31st to August 16th.

New dates for the tournament have been agreed after discussions with the BBC, Sheffield Theatres and Sheffield city council. The governing body of the sport wishes to stage the event with a full crowd. “It is crucial for our 128 tour players to know that we are doing everything we can to get our circuit going again as soon as it is considered safe to do so by the government. The players are self-employed and they need opportunities to earn, while we keep the health and safety of everyone involved in an event of this scale as a priority.

“In recent weeks we have had intricate negotiations with our key broadcasters including the BBC and Eurosport as well as the Crucible itself and Sheffield City Council. I would like to express my gratitude to all of them as we have progressed to a solution.

“Our sincere hope is that we are able to play the tournament with a full crowd as usual. This event means so much to the fans who have a golden ticket for the Crucible experience, and to the people of Sheffield. The players will desperately want to compete in the atmosphere that only a packed Crucible can generate.

“However if that is not possible then we will give careful consideration to each scenario.”

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture parks and leisure at Sheffield city council, added: “The World Snooker Championship is one of Sheffield’s annual highlights, something the city looks forward to and is immensely proud of. Although it is disappointing that so many of our events have been cancelled or postponed it is also essential while we meet the current challenges.

“I’m pleased that the Championship has been rescheduled and I really hope that it can be celebrated at the Crucible Theatre in true Sheffield style, when it is safe to do so. We will continue to work with WST and support all decisions taken, to help them deliver the competition whilst keeping everyone safe.”
