12 against dealer 4

A total of 12 going against a dealer’s 4 is another hand where the right strategy is dependent upon the makeup of the cards in a player’s hand because there are five different ways to be dealt that total.

If it is a pair of sixes of course the answer is to split them, while with a 10-value card and a two the correct approach would be to hit, while in the other three cases (9-3, 8-4, and 7-5) a player should stand.This is because by having even that one 10-value card in your hand, it reduces the chances of receiving another one and therefore going bust enough to make taking the hit on a 10-2 hand a worthwhile opportunity.

The basic idea of the game of blackjack is to beat the dealer.The winner is whoever has a hand closest to a total of 21. You reach 21 by adding up the values of the cards.You bust and lose automatically when your cards total more than 21. A regular Blackjack table seats about 6 players. Usually six or eight decks of cards are shuffled together by the dealer and placed in a shoe (card dispensing box).Before receiving any cards players must place a bet. The players are then dealt two cards face up. The dealer deals themself one card, face up and another face down. Each player in turn chooses to either stay or take more cards to try and get their hand closer to 21 without busting. Players who do not bust wait for the dealer's turn. When all the players are done, the dealer turns over the face down card to reveal their total.When playing standard rules, on a total of 17 or higher, the dealer must stay; on a total of 16 or lower the dealer must draw another card.If a player makes a total of 21 with their first two cards (a 10 or a face and an Ace), they win automatically. This is called 'Blackjack'. If a player has Blackjack they will win 1.5 times their bet unless the dealer also has Blackjack, in this case it is called a "Push" or "Tie" (Stand-off) and the player get thier bet back.Any remaining players with a higher total than the dealer (but 21 or less) win an equal amount to their bet.Players with a total lower than the dealer lose their bet. If the dealer busts then all the remaining players win. There are other betting options namely Insurance, Surrender, Double Down, Even Money and Split.Insurance: side bet up to half the initial bet against the dealer having a natural 21 - allowed only when the dealer's showing card is an Ace. If the dealer has a 10 face down and makes a blackjack, insurance pays at 2-1 odds, but loses if the dealer does not.Surrender: giving up your hand and lose only half the bet.Early Surrender: surrender allowed before the dealer checks for blackjack.Late Surrender: the dealer first checks to see if he has blackjack. If he does, surrender is not permitted.Double Down: double your initial bet following the initial two-card deal, but you can hit one card only. A good bet if the player is in a strong situation. Most casinos will allow you to double down on any two cards. Some casinos will let you double down after splitting and some will limit your doubling down to hands that total ten or eleven. However, there is one condition: When you double down, you must take one additional card and you cannot receive more than one.Even Money: cashing in your bet immediately at a 1:1 payout ratio when you are dealt a natural blackjack and the dealer's showing card is an Ace.Split Hand: split the initial two-card hand into two and play them separately - allowed only when the two first cards are of equal value. Use each card as the start to a separate hand and place a second bet equal to the first.Hard Hand: A hand without an Ace, or with an Ace valued at 1 is said to be Hard in that it can only be given one value, unlike a Soft Hand. (You can value an Ace 1 or 11 to suit you).Soft Hand: A hand that contains an Ace counted as 11 is called a Soft Hand.Summary:

• The object of Blackjack is to accumulate cards with a combined total as close to 21 as possible but without going over 21.
• Jacks, Queens and Kings (face cards) are all worth 10 points. Aces are worth 1 or 11, whichever is preferable at the time of playing. Other cards are represented by their number.
• If the player and the dealer tie, it is a push and no one wins.
• Ace and 10 on the first two cards dealt (Blackjack) is an automatic player win at 1.5 to 1, unless the dealer ties.
• A player may stand at any time.

Blackjack variations

• Using different number of decks: all other conditions being the same, as a general rule the fewer the decks, the better for the player.
• Allowing the dealer to hit a soft 17: a disadvantage to the player. It gives the dealer a chance to improve.
• Allowing a double down after splitting pairs: can be advantageous to the player if used wisely.
• Allowing re-splitting of Aces: a clear advantage to the player.
• No dealer hole card: common on cruise ships, this variation is a disadvantage to the player. The dealer does not deal himself a second card until the players have played and they can lose the doubles and splits.

Las Vegas and Atlantic City variationsLas Vegas blackjack:Las Vegas games are played with two decks and the House must hit on hands less than soft 17 (17 involving an Ace) and must stand on hands of 17 or greater.Atlantic City blackjack:Atlantic City games are played with four decks and the House must hit on 16 and stand all 17's.Perfect Pairs blackjackPerfect Pairs is a blackjack side bet. It can be played on a standard blackjack table and does not require the main game rules to be changed. All Perfect Pairs wagers are decided and dealt with at the completion of the initial deal.Perfect Pairs bets are made prior to any cards being dealt and must be supported by a regular Blackjack bet on the same betting box. Insurance – The Sucker Bet of Blackjack

Each table game has a sucker bet which gives the house a greater edge over players and should altogether be avoided. In blackjack, insurance is that bet. Basic strategy players are recommended to altogether avoid buying insurance when the dealer’s up card is an ace.

Let’s consider the following example for a moment. A single deck of 52 cards contains 16 ten-value cards and 36 non-ten cards. When an ace is drawn, this will reduce the number of non-tens to 35 only and the deck will have 16 ten-value cards left.

If you insure your hand for say $10 51 times, you will lose your insurance 35 times for total loses of $350 and win with your side bet 16 times, turning a profit of $320. In other words, insurance will cost you $30 out of every $510 you have wagered. In this scenario, the house advanatage is more than 5.80%.

Some players would wrongfully assume that they must insure strong hands like K, Q or J, K against the dealer’s ace. However, logic tells you this is actually the worst time to insure against a dealer blackjack because you have drawn 2 of the 16 ten-value cards, reducing their number to 14 (for a single-deck game).

The ratio of the remaining cards will now be 35 small cards and 14 ten-value cards. What this means is you will lose your insurance bets 35 times and win only 14 times, i.e. if you make the side bet 51 times. If you insure your hands for $10, you will incur losses of $350 and generate $280 in profits. The only way not to get crushed with an insurance bet is to count cards and know when the dealer has high chances of having a face card.

Payouts

If the dealer is bust (i.e. their hand exceeds 21), all other remaining players win. If the dealer’s hand totals between 17 and 21, it is compared to the other players’ hands. Players with a higher point total win a payout of 1:1, so if you bet £10, you would win £10 and also get your £10 stake back. Players with a lower score than the dealer lose their bet. In the case that the dealer and the player have the same score, the result is a push. This means the player gets back their original bet. When the dealer has blackjack, only players who also have blackjack will get a payout. This result is paid at 1:1, rather than 3:2 when the player only has blackjack. It is worth noting that if a player’s hand has a total of 21 from 3 or more cards, this does not beat a dealer blackjack.

Insurance

It comes into play when the dealer’s face-up card is Ace. Any of the players play side bet up to half the bet of the original. The deal goes on the probability of blackjack with the dealer, i.e, the chances of the hole card or face down card being a ten-card is gambled.

If the dealer has blackjack, the player gets the double amount of the side bet made by him/her. Simple blackjack rules suggest the avoidance of this side rule, because in the long run this bet has more chances of losing money.

How to play Blackjack?

In Blackjack you recieve two cards. You can 'stay' on the total of these two cards or 'twist' and take cards to try and get as close to 21 as possible. If you take more cards and go over 21, you 'bust' and lose. After all players have made their decisions the dealer will reveal his two cards. If the dealer has 17 or higher he can not take anymore cards and this is his total. If he has 16 or less he must take more cards to get to 17 or higher. When the dealer goes over 21, or goes 'bust'  everyone wins. You only have to beat the dealer's hand not each other's.

How to play our Fun Casino Blackjack Tables

First, place a bet onto the Blackjack table into the square or circular box in front of you. There is always a minimum amount you are allowed to place and of course a maximum bet. You, and everyone playing, will now be dealt two cards face up. The total of your two cards is your starting point. The croupier receives one card also face up so you can see it.

As an example, if you have an 8 and a 6 your total ‘hand’ is 14. You now have to decide whether you take another card ‘to hit’ or to stand ‘stick’. Your aim is to get to 21 without going over otherwise known as ‘busting’. If you hit on your 14 and receive a 10 then you now have 24, this is ‘too many’ and therefore you lose instantly. If you hit and get a 4 you now have 18. This would be considered a good hand and so there is no need to take any more cards.

After each of the players at the blackjack table have 'hit' or 'stood' on their 'hand' the croupier will then take his cards. If he gets to 17 or higher he must stop, he will take no more cards.

If the dealer has 16 or less he must take more cards and hit again. If the dealer takes more cards and he now has 18, anyone with less than 18 loses. If you have more, you win. If you have 18, the same,  it’s a 'push' you don’t win or lose – you just keep your bet. The same goes for the rest of the players.

If the croupier takes more cards and goes over 21 then everyone at the table wins regardless of their total.  If you receive a 'Blackjack' this means any Ace with any 10 value card such as a King, Queen, or Jack, you cannot lose. You will get paid 3 to 2 odds. Unfortunately if the croupier also gets 'Blackjack' it’s a 'push'.

   Blackjack RulesHit: Or 'Twist' means to take another card. A player should tap on the table with his/her hand to signal to the dealer/croupier that you would like another card.Stand: You wish to take no more cards, also called "stick" or "stay". As a player you must wave a flat hand side to side (horizontally) to signal you do not want any more cards.Push: You don’t win and you don’t lose.Draw: To take cards from the shoe.Shoe: A plastic rack that hold 6-8 decks of cards and from where the dealer pulls the cards.Double down: After receiving your first two cards, a player has the option to "double down". This  means to put more money behind your original bet (you have £5 and then you place another £5 behind) but you only receive one more card.

Split: If you have two cards of the same value, for example two 8’s you can 'split' and make two new 'hands' by placing another equal bet on the table. (your original bet is £5 you add another £5 to the table). You play these two hands as you would normally i.e 'hit' and take more cards or 'stay'/'stand'. Of course you will take more cards on the 8 but at what total you stop is your decision.
