Last week, I met with South West Water/Pennon Group to discuss a number of ongoing issues. The reality is that there are clearly a number of areas where South West Water can/should be doing far better than they currently are:

1. Whilst welcoming their work to reduce storm overflows + infrastructure, I made it clear that their goals need to be more ambitious to ensure that sewage overflows are a reduced as much as possible. 
2. Pennon have a 2050 plan (focusing on climate change, drainage and waste management). Again, I stated that this was too slow and that infrastructure needs improving and replacing as soon as possible. 
3. 70% of issues are caused primarily by things people put into the network (fat/wet wipes etc.). Whilst SWW need to do their job (much better), we all also need to be helping by not putting items into the system that absolutely shouldn’t be there. 
4. Given the scale of the work required, I also made it clear to SWW that the burden should absolutely not be placed entirely on bill payers and should be funded through other means.

On the topic of sewage, it’s also important to clarify what actually happened with the Duke of Wellington’s amendment in October 2021. Nobody voted to ‘allow the dumping of sewage’ and any suggestion otherwise is simply misleading, as the articles below outline:

St Mellion pair Mike Nancekivell and Peter Mehigan scored a fantastic 46 stableford points to win the Lord Lieutenants Trophy yesterday at Merlin.

With the course in excellent condition pairs from clubs across the county competed in a 4 ball better ball format with the proceeds raised from the competition being donated to the St John Ambulance Cornwall Division.

The early pace setters were local pairing of Dave Osgood and Mick Hargreaves with 44 points and although this score was equalled by Ben Treleaven & Daniel Sleeman (Falmouth) and Mark Austerfield & Ian Colwill (Merlin) they still held top slot on count back.

However this all changed when Nancekivell & Mehigan playing in the penultimate four ball posted the winning score.

At the presentation the trophy and commemorative tankards were presented to the winners and runners up by the CGU Immediate Past President Graham Binney and Commander Bob Sturland of the St John Ambulance was present to receive a donation of £750.00

Strong winds of up to 70mph are set to sweep the UK in the coming days, disrupting travel, power supplies and Storm Eunice recovery efforts, forecasters have warned

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for wind covering most of the UK on Sunday and Monday, after northern England faced blizzard-like conditions on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, thousands of homes are still without power after Eunice hit parts of the UK on Friday, and insurers said clean-up costs could rise above £300 million.

At the height of the storm, the roof of the O2 Arena in London was damaged – causing rapper Dave’s upcoming concerts to be postponed – and the spire of St Thomas Church in Wells, Somerset, crashed to the ground.

Saturday brought snowy weather to parts of Yorkshire and strong winds to the south coast, with a calmer evening forecast.

But forecasters have warned Sunday could see gales of up to 70mph in some parts of England, which is the same speed recorded at Heathrow Airport on Friday when thousands watched planes struggling to land on YouTube channel Big Jet TV.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst urged Britons to brace for more windy weather.

Speaking on Saturday, he added: “We will see a slight easing in the wind over the evening time tonight, but it’s not long before they pick up again tomorrow to lead to another windy day across the UK.

“This will have an impact on the clearing up process over the course of the day.”

A yellow warning for wind has been issued for England and Wales on Sunday from midday until 3pm, while Northern Ireland and north-west England are covered by the same warning until midnight.

Identical warnings have also been issued for Monday.

A yellow warning for rain from midnight until 6pm on Sunday is in place for Cumbria, Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

The Association of British Insurers warned previous storms similar to Eunice cost around £360 million in repairs.

A spokesman said: “It is too early to estimate the likely insured cost of Storm Eunice, when insurers will be focusing on assessing damage and helping their customers recover.

“No two storms are the same. The last significant storms to hit the UK – Ciara and Dennis – led to insurers paying out over £360 million.”

In an update on Saturday, the Energy Networks Association said about 155,000 customers remained without power in the South, Wales and East, while some 1.22 million had been reconnected.

Parts of northern England saw heavy snowfall on Saturday (Danny Lawson/PA)

Electricity provider Western Power Distribution (WPD) said Storm Eunice caused a record number of power cuts in the south west of England.

It said: “Since it first hit, Storm Eunice has officially caused the highest number of power cuts in a 24 hour period our South West region has ever experienced.

“Our engineers are continuing to work relentlessly to restore supplies to our customers despite the awful conditions.”

Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said on Saturday afternoon that 190,000 customers still had no electricity and restoration efforts were being impacted by continued strong winds across southern England.

He tweeted: “Storm Eustice update: 1.2 million customers have had power restored. 190k are off-supply 8,000 field staff and engineers are working day and night to restore power.

National Rail has warned there is still “major disruption” to train services “across most of Great Britain”.

A man in his 20s was killed in Alton, Hampshire, after a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter pick-up collided with a tree in Old Odiham Road.

In Co Wexford, Ireland, a council worker clearing debris was killed by a falling tree.

It was good to hear the Minister acknowledge the distressing situation, however predictable it is, and I hope that his colleagues in government will follow suit and acknowledge the sheer stress that has been caused. As we have heard, thousands of healthy pigs have already been culled as a result of overcrowding on farms due to the lack of skilled labour—I stress the skilled element of that—in our abattoirs and meat processing plants. Let us be clear: these animals have been taken out of the food chain. Healthy animals and meat are going into the bin, causing huge emotional and economic damage to our farmers. I pay tribute to the eloquent and dignified ways in which pig farmers have responded, particularly those from East Yorkshire, where one farm has seen the number of pigs leaving for processing drop by 25%, and probably more, in 11 weeks. Picking up on rumours in the media today about more temporary visas being offered, do the Government expect a better response than we have seen so far in the HGV sector?
