Originally from Kent in England, Liv Boeree is one of the most successful female poker players of all time, with over $4m in live tournament earnings.

She studied at the University of Manchester, achieving a first-class degree in Astrophysics. She is in high demand as a speaker in her native UK as well as abroad, in addition to being a sought after tv presenter. Her TED talk created a buzz and has currently almost amassed over 3m views.

Liv first caught the poker bug when she was picked to take part in a reality poker TV show in the UK back in 2005. Soon after she became a regular host on various poker coverage shows, and it wasn’t long before she was making waves at the table herself. Liv’s first major live cash came when she won the European Ladies Championship in 2008 for $42,000, followed by a string of other impressive money finishes at events around the world. Highlights included an impressive run at the 2009 Five Star World Poker Classic in Las Vegas, where she final tabled two side tournaments and made a top 40 finish in the $25,000 WPT Championship Main Event.

Then came the moment that would change Liv’s life forever, and make the poker world give her the credit her game deserves. Liv travelled to Italy to play at the European Poker Tour (EPT) Season 6 Sanremo event in 2010 – a tournament that proved to be one of the biggest ever, with a packed field of 1,240 runners. After days of intense action, Liv found herself on the final table, and duly went on to crush the remaining players to take the title and a massive $1,698,300 payday, confirming Liv’s status as one of the finest players the UK has ever produced.

The unit

The Velo 2 is a cinch to use, with a clear display that auto-adjusts the brightness based on the ambient light. The lines of travel are coherent and clear, making it really easy to see at a glance.

It gives a notification just before you need to turn, which is particularly useful if you've been on a long straight, say, and you're not really paying attention to the unit...

The turn-by-turn navigation works effectively and reroutes quickly enough that the couple of times I did miss a turning I saw afterwards that I'd hardly deviated from the original route.

You can also use the Velo 2 in a more 'organic' way, with turn-by-turn navigation off, and instead having it just point you in the right direction. This is what the original Beeline did, which wasn't ideal for London, but for use out in the country when you aren't trying to get somewhere as quickly as possible, it makes a nice way to explore. With the rise of gravel biking, this mode is even more appealing, enabling you to really get off the beaten track without worrying about becoming completely lost.

To flick through the screens and options you just press the sides of the unit, there are no buttons. This not only gives it a clean and simple look, it also means maximum space for the display. You can see where to press with the four light dashes around the edge and on-screen prompts for things like ending or pausing your ride.

It was fairly accurate in terms of recording my speed compared with my Garmin, though it doesn't pick up changes in pace as quickly, which is unsurprising given that it's using my phone's GPS rather than the dedicated speed sensor for the Garmin. You can't connect any ANT+ sensors to the Beeline, so speed, cadence and heart rate monitors are not an option.

How to Play

• Each player places a bet in the betting areas marked on the layout. All Players receive two cards and the Dealer one.
• The Players are asked in turn whether they wish to ‘draw’ another card or ‘stay’ with the total they have.
• Once all Players have finished the Dealer draws cards to their hand.
• The Dealer must draw a card if they have 16 or less. When the Dealer’s hand reaches a total of 17 or more they cannot draw another card.
• All winning bets are paid even money with the exception of any Blackjacks.

A new quiz has been launched to test people's ability to read a poker face.

A study of 2,000 adults revealed an overwhelming majority consider themselves a cut above the rest when it comes to being able to spot a liar.

Nearly one in five (17 per cent) think they have an excellent poker face, with a further 32 per cent thinking they’re good at pulling the wool over the eyes of others.

Just one in 20 (five per cent) felt they were terrible at covering up what they really think.

When it came to their own 'tells' - a sign where someone is bluffing – fiddling with chips, sitting up in the chair when they have a good hand and trembling hands are the key signs to look out for.

A staggering 42 per cent said they were good at spotting when others were lying to them, while just nine per cent thought they were poor at it.

A spokesperson for Online Betting Guide, which commissioned the research, said: "Many might think they are good when it comes to a poker face, but the smallest thing can very easily give them away.

"Knowing when to bluff and when not to bluff can be a useful life skill and get you out of some sticky situations – both at the poker table and in your normal life.

"And it's also handy when it comes to knowing when others might be trying to use it to get the upper hand over you."

Body language expert Judi James, author of Poker Face, said: "Body language is not a precise science and when you’re looking for signs of lying there is no such thing as a perfect body language ‘tell’, only clues and hints.

"Poker players in particular can use micro-gestures when they lie or bluff, but a good liar could use this to their benefit, acting the ‘tell’ to suit themselves and confuse their opponents.

"Imagine you’ve spotted an opponent’s ‘tell’ when you’re playing poker. You’ve noticed that when they are bluffing their eyes dart quickly from side to side.

"This ‘tell’ is only useful to you if they’re not aware of it themselves though. If they know their own trait then they can use it to fool you too. Are they bluffing or is this a double-bluff?"

The research, carried out by OnePoll, also revealed when people think it’s a good time to employ their bluffing skills.

With playing poker (25 per cent), when someone asks if you like what they’re wearing and you don’t (25 per cent) and when someone makes you a horrible meal (23 per cent) considered the best scenarios.

An identical study carried out at the same time in the US also revealed some interesting comparisons between the two nations.

On average, Brits admit to deploying their poker face three times a day – slightly less than Americans who get theirs out four times a day.

And 42 per cent of Americans think of themselves as someone who wears their heart on their sleeve and finds it difficult to hide their emotions.

UK adults said they lied four times a day on average, with Americans slightly ahead on 4.3 times a day.

Americans also feel they are lied to slightly more than people in the UK (5.8 to 5.3 respectively).

Despite lying and feeling they are lied to more, 54 per cent said honesty was very important to them, compared to just 43 per cent of UK adults.
