2. Whitelock’s Ale House
© Copyright Leeds-List 2022 by Ollievision
When it’s blowing a hooley outside, Whitelock’s is just the city centre shelter you need. Dive down the little alley round the back of Trinity or off Briggate and step into the warm interior of one of the oldest public houses in Leeds. With over 300 years of history behind it, you won’t regret the diversion.
The decor is pure old school charm, all antique stained glass, dark furniture and original tiles, but don’t be fooled. The giant ale list is bang up to date, there are cocktails for the liquor-lovers and the classic pub grub has a few modern twists. Pull up a pew by the original log fire and tuck into black pudding scotch duck eggs and ale-battered haddock and chips while you get the feeling back in your toes.

For a dose of theatrics before your show, it has to be Teppanyaki. Chefs cook Japanese cuisine with flair on the hot plate right in front of you. Their set menus mean that you’ll be feasting on three courses from £28.50 per person. Start with slurpable miso soup, before tucking into king prawns, scallops and salmon with noodles and veggies and finish off with a slice or two of refreshing melon.

Crunchy greens with carrot-ginger dressing
This recipe draws inspiration from the sunny-orange flavour of green salads with carrot-ginger dressing at Japanese American restaurants. The pulpy, aromatic dressing may be the star, but a salad is only as good as its lettuce. After washing and thoroughly spin-drying the greens in a salad spinner (alternatively, you can pat them dry in a clean kitchen towel), one way to maximise their crunch before adding the dressing is to refrigerate them, covered, for at least 30 minutes. Little Gem has a sweet, juicy sturdiness, but regular packaged mixed greens, baby spinach and chopped romaine hearts work, too.
By: Eric Kim
Serves: 2 to 4
Total time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
1 small carrot, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 (2½cm) piece fresh ginger, peeled and coarsely chopped
60ml extra-virgin olive oil
2 tbsp rice vinegar
1½ tsp soy sauce
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp onion powder
Salt
2 to 4 heads Little Gem lettuce, leaves separated, or 1 romaine heart, chopped
60g fresh mint leaves
Method:
1. Make the dressing: in a food processor, purée the carrot, ginger, olive oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, onion powder, a pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon cold water until as smooth as possible, 1 to 2 minutes.
2. Dress the salad: place the lettuce leaves in a large serving bowl. Add a couple of tablespoons of the dressing and toss, then add more as needed to evenly coat. The salad should be lightly dressed, not drowned; don’t use every drop of dressing if you don’t need to. Taste for seasoning, adjusting with more salt as desired. Top the salad with the mint leaves and serve immediately.
The Maven
What makes The Maven one of the coolest bars in Leeds? It could be that it doesn’t have any external signage, only an inconspicuous door and the tiled stairs within. Perhaps it’s the well-dressed mixologists making creative (and endlessly quaffable) concoctions from behind the bar. It might even be the decor – we’re talking dark walls adorned with kooky artwork and cosy leather booths. And then there’s the soundtrack, which will have you dancing all night long. Let’s face it, it’s all of the above.
The Maven, 1-3 Call Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 7DH.

There’s wifi, plugs and big tables, but you can always dine in the restaurant, before shifting over to one of their two bars to round off your discussions. And why wouldn’t you with creative cocktails, local gin and hand-picked wine?

How To Play Hey Sushi Slot
Those who are eager to sit by the conveyor belt can join the golden tutrle and wait for the good stuff to arrive. It all begins with the push of the play button, which is located in the bottom of the reel-set, right underneath the third reel.
But before you pick up your first roll with the chopsticks, or fingers, it's best to configure a bet amount that you deem appropriate for the reel adventure ahead. To do that, select the coin value, which can be done by pressing the minus and plus buttons.
The above determines the bet amount, however, the bets can be raised higher or fine-tuned by selecting the bet level. Each number represents a multiplier for the bet amount that's been selected from the Coin setting. The smallest bet in the game is 25p and let's just say that the biggest bet doesn't end at £500.00 per spin.

You could be tucking into smoked mackerel and pale ale rarebit to start, jalapeño sausage and mash for your main and a triple chocolate brownie with a dollop of ice cream to finish. You won’t be needing those theatre snacks after all.

Mango slaw
There is something intriguing about coleslaw with mangos
(Getty/iStock)
There is absolutely nothing new about coleslaw, but there is something slightly intriguing about coleslaw with mangos. Often, when we think of coleslaw, we think of it as a side for fish and chips, barbecue or heavy, mayonnaise-drenched cabbage. But just think about the cool, crunchy sweetness of the cabbage, carrots and mango, paired with the spicy kick of jerk chicken. What’s a better combination? You also don’t have to serve it as a side: it can be tucked into a sandwich or wrap. One of the best things about this recipe is that all the ingredients are readily available, and there are many shortcuts you can take, like using a bagged mix. Who wants to ruin their knuckles on a box grater, or break out the food processor?
By: Millie Peartree
Makes: 3 cups
Total time: 5 minutes, plus chilling
Ingredients:
1 (225g) bag coleslaw
2 large, slightly firm mangoes (about 800g), peeled, pitted and thinly sliced
½ cup chopped fresh coriander
2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tbsp honey or agave syrup
¼ tsp celery salt
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
Method:
1. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Toss with tongs or a fork to combine.
2. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serve cold.

Lotherton
As historic houses go, this is one of the best. Lotherton Hall is a grand country house on the outskirts of Leeds. It acts as a doorway into the past, showing you how the upper classes lived in 19th-century Britain and inviting you to venture below stairs into the carefully restored servants quarters. You can even see the clothes of the time in their specialist fashion galleries.
As you explore, you’ll stumble upon famous works of art and carefully crafted pieces by the most important designers and makers of the time. From fine furniture to ceramics and jewellery, they have it all. The view from outside this stunning stately home is just as good. Landscaped Edwardian gardens give way to orchards and deer parks, while closer to home, Lotherton’s very own zoo, Wildlife World, promises Humboldt penguins, capybaras and more.
Lotherton, Lotherton Lane, Aberford, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS25 3EB. The house is open from March to October. Tickets are £9 for adults and £4.55 for children. Membership is £27.05 and gives you unlimited visits for a year. Please note, Wildlife World’s Africa walkthrough is currently closed, but the penguin enclosure is open as usual.

Bramham Park
Built in 1698 and inspired by Lord Bingley’s grand tour, Bramham Park toes the line between traditional baroque and Palladian architecture. As to who designed it, no one knows. Many a famous name has been thrown around, including Giacomo Leoni, Thomas Archer and James Paine, but the most popular theory is that Lord Bingley designed it himself.
This is one of the most beautiful country houses in Leeds. It’s surrounded by 900 acres of rolling countryside. Here too, you’ll find a juxtaposition of styles, as the strict formality of 17th century design gives way to the natural landscapes of the 18th century. Needless to say, there’s oodles of exploring to be done – you can hunt out the hidden follies or simply follow the public footpath across the estate and take in the views, the choice is yours.
Bramham Park, Bramham Lane, Wetherby, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS23 6ND. The house and gardens are open by appointment only. Entry to the house is £15 per person, with a minimum party of 10, and entry to the gardens is £8 for adults and £5 for concessions and children.
Once Upon a Vine
© Copyright Leeds-List 2022 by Andrew Emery
If there’s one thing better than a mighty platter of cheese, it’s a mighty platter of cheese paired with the perfect wine. Once Upon a Vine is a wine shop first and foremost, but one that takes the food that accompany its tastings very seriously. If you can resist the temptation of the charcuterie, you can try four different cheeses for a reasonable £14.95.
What’s on offer? Délice de Bourgogne is a triple-cream Brie-like cheese, while Killeen is a goat’s gouda that might even tempt goat’s cheese sceptics. Baron Bigod Brie is so oozy it may escape the table, so eat it quickly. There’s more besides, plus pickles, chutney, crackers and sourdough – just don’t forget the wine.
Once Upon a Vine, 21 Town Street, Horsforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS18 5LJ.
It’s time to get the old grey matter into gear as Leeds International Festival of Ideas announces plans for 2022.
Leeds International Festival of Ideas – LIFi to its mates – has become one of the most reliably enjoyable, engaging and unique parts of the city’s calendar. 2021’s instalment saw the likes of Katherine Ryan and George Clarke coming to Leeds, and now planning for 2022 is well under way – it promises to be a doozy. Get ready for big announcements, renowned names and events to inspire.
Credit: Tom Martin
The old Leeds International Festival, which has been running since 2017, evolved last year into Leeds International Festival of Ideas. This year’s programme looks to build on its success, with a four-day programme of provocative debate, fascinating talks and some of the country’s greatest minds. Sound good? Well, they’ve just announced the first three guests, and if they’re anything to go by, LIFI22 is really going to lift off this year.
“It’s great to be announcing that the festival is back in 2022. With new dates and a new city centre home, we have another amazing line-up of speakers to once again discuss and debate some of those thought-provoking issues of our time,” Head of Festival and Co-Director of LeedsBID Martin Dickson told us. That new home is the recently revamped Howard Assembly Room and Howard Opera Centre, which will provide a gleaming, accessible hub for the events, right in the heart of the city. So, who have they got lined up so far?
PreviousNextChef, restauranteur and Guardian Food columnist Yotam Ottolenghi is one of the trio of names announced. Credited with helping to popularise Middle Eastern cooking in the UK – once obscure ingredients championed in his columns have gone on to become store cupboard staples – he owns and runs a string of delicatessens and restaurants across London. He’s changed the way we view non-carnivorous cooking through his approach to vegetables, and is always an interesting, inspirational speaker.
He’s joined by David Olusoga OBE, Professor of Public History at The University of Manchester and author of the acclaimed Black and British: A Forgotten History. The noted British-Nigerian broadcaster and historian is an expert at bringing to light forgotten tales of the past, and telling illuminating stories about empire, war, racism and culture. A riveting public speaker, he’s interviewed Barack Obama, delivered must-see documentaries and his appearance at LIFI promises to be a hot ticket.
Credit: Tom Martin
Rounding off the initial hat-trick of guests is Lara Lewington, the journalist and TV presenter who co-hosts BBC technology programme Click. First as a reporter and then as a co-presenter, she’s built up a stellar reputation for shedding light on and explaining cutting-edge developments in the tech sector – she’s also technology columnist for Woman magazine. Her topic is a hot one. “I’ll be talking to a panel of experts about the metaverse,” she explained. “Do they see it as a dark dangerous path, or a liberating online life?”
More announcements are around the corner, so keep an eye out for updates and ticket news. There will be talks, debates and panels around hot-button ideas such as mental health, climate inequality, sports, social justice, comedy and exactly what it’s acceptable to laugh about. They’ll be releasing the full programme on Thursday 26th April 2022, as well as tickets, so put the date in your diary and get in there before anyone else.
Leeds International Festival of Ideas will take over Howard Assembly Room and Howard Opera Centre from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th September 2022.
